Dating back to 2003, Iowa has been the third-most profitable “under” bet in the Big Ten. This is the same program that once had fans in its student section with t-shirts that read, “Punting is winning.”
But times change, even for the sport’s elder statesman, Kirk Ferentz. Entering his 28th season in charge of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Ferentz may have his most explosive offense in more than a decade. Explosive may be a relative term, but trust me when I say, this year’s Hawkeyes will be cashing plenty of over tickets.
While Iowa has generally won with defense and special teams under Ferentz, they stretch their legs a bit in non-conference play, routinely laying big numbers on overmatched teams in “paycheck games.” As a result, overs have paid out at a 59% clip for Iowa in non-conference games since 2023 (t-3rd in B1G Ten).
Tim Lester, Iowa’s offensive coordinator, made a pretty big splash in Year 1 in Iowa City. He helped them improve by 12 points per game and that growth continued in his second season with Iowa finishing 54th nationally at 29.3 ppg. The Greatest Show on Turf they are not, but that kind of improvement is juxtaposed with their brand perception. Casual bettors still view them as the epitome of three yards and a cloud of dust.
This Iowa offense pumped in 30+ points on seven occasions last season and they have dynamic playmakers in their backfield and out wide to continue that trend this fall. Xavier Williams, when healthy, is a home run hitter out of the backfield. And the acquisition of Tony Diaz at wide receiver provides the Hawkeyes with their best big play threat on the perimeter since Marvin McNutt fifteen years ago.
Diaz earned freshman All-American honors at UT Rio Grande Valley as a speedster out of the slot. Many in recruiting circles had him pegged to sign with Alabama but he opted for Iowa. Since then he’s been turning heads in camp and beat writers believe he’s primed for a breakout season. Diaz, Williams and Kamari Moulton will make life easier for first-time starter Jeremy Hecklinski.
As for the NIU part of this equation, the Huskies will be an over-bettor’s dream this season. The Huskies’ defensive two-deep is in shambles, and it’s likely they’ll field one of the worst defenses in the Mountain West this season. And offensively they have some interesting pieces to rely upon in shootouts. Offensive coordinator Tony Petersen takes over playcalling duties after doing an outstanding job at Illinois State. His Redbirds came within a point of the FCS national title. Tommy Rittenhouse, his sawed-off quarterback, finished with an eyepopping 47 total touchdowns. And Petersen has found his new triggerman after NIU pulled off a major portal coup. Taron Dickens, fresh off a 38:2 TD/INT season at Western Carolina, arrives with buzz and confidence. He’s accurate and a sneaky good athlete capable of extending plays with the best of them. When you pair him with Telly Johnson, a powerful back who nearly had 6 yards per carry last season, it’s easy to see this offense creating big plays.
If this game were played four years ago the total could have been listed at 36 and I would have played the under. But given Iowa’s playmakers offensive, NIU defensive limitations and the likelihood that their quarterback upgrade pays immediate dividends, I’ve circled this one as my favorite over of Week 1.

Getting T. Dickens is a boost to what was going to be a paltry NIU offense. I don’t think Northern Illinois can win this game, but I do think they can score 10 points, which should help facilitate the over. Iowa should destroy NIU in the trenches.
42-10 type game. Over. Really like this play.
