I really like App State this week in the "Deeper Than Hate" rivalry.
This is a spot where the market might be overreacting a bit to App State coming off that big home win over JMU, giving us a better number. If this were just a regular Sun Belt matchup, I could understand the hesitation with a potential letdown spot.
But this is a rivalry game between two proud programs that go way back to their FCS days, and these two teams absolutely do not like each other.
I like the way Appalachian State quarterback Malachi Singleton has been throwing the ball lately, and his receivers have been doing a nice job helping him out.
Sam Pickett III, Nate Branch and Darrin Fugitt have all been really reliable targets, and I think this group can take advantage of a pretty weak Georgia Southern secondary that has given up a ton of explosive passes.
App State’s defense hasn’t been bad either, and I’m still not really buying Georgia Southern offensively or as a team overall. The Eagles have struggled badly to run the football, and even though the offense is built to be explosive, it just hasn’t been.
That usually leads to methodical drives, and those can easily turn into mistakes. On top of that, App State’s secondary has been very opportunistic this season, forcing 10 interceptions.
App State vs Georgia Southern Pick, Betting Analysis
Appalachian State may have lost to Georgia Southern twice last year — once in the regular season and once in a bowl game — but I think we see the Mountaineers bounce back off that James Madison win and respond here.
This is a rivalry game, so I don’t think App State will sleepwalk through it. I don’t think this team is overlooking its biggest rival.
The Mountaineers will show up, play well and win this game outright.
