Arizona Wildcats Betting Preview

Joey McGuire and Texas Tech are once again contenders in the Big 12, coming off a Championship season a year ago, but last week's loss at Cincinnati was a bit of a reality check.

The Red Raiders entered that game undefeated but have been nowhere near as dominant as they were in 2025. After falling 37-24 in a game the Bearcats dominated, they now return home sitting at 6-1 and 3-1 in conference play.

This is still a good football team, particularly in Lubbock, where McGuire has built a significant home-field advantage. Texas Tech has won 12 straight at home, and McGuire is 26-5 there during his tenure.

Offensively, the Red Raiders have leaned heavily on their rushing attack. Running back J'Koby Williams has been excellent, rushing for 619 yards and five touchdowns while averaging more than seven yards per carry.

Texas Tech ranks 16th nationally in Rush Success Rate, and I'd expect the Red Raiders to test Arizona's front early and often.

The passing attack is where I have more questions. QB Will Hammond has thrown for 1,561 yards but has just six touchdowns against six interceptions.

He's made plenty of plays, but the turnovers remain concerning against an Arizona defense that has proven capable of making life difficult on opposing quarterbacks.

On the other side of the ball, Texas Tech's defense is just not the same as last year's unit.

They still rank 16th nationally in Rush Success Rate allowed, but the edge rushers are nowhere near the same after losing guys like David Bailey.

That has led to a pass defense that has really struggled.

Texas Tech ranks just 85th nationally in Pass Success Rate allowed, which is alarming in this matchup against one of the most experienced quarterbacks in the country.

If the Red Raiders can't consistently make Noah Fifita uncomfortable, Arizona should have opportunities to move the football all afternoon.

Texas Tech Red Raiders Betting Preview

There are simply not enough people talking about how well Arizona is playing right now.

The Wildcats sit at 6-1 and have won five straight since their only loss of the season at BYU, in a game they easily could have won.

The recent results have been particularly impressive, beating Cincinnati 34-7, winning 52-31 at West Virginia, and then absolutely hammering Iowa State 39-3 last week.

There is plenty of confidence within this locker room right now, and the biggest driver of that is QB Noah Fifita.

I think Fifita is criminally underrated nationally. He's a flat-out winner, and in a landscape where most chase the cash and enter the portal, he deserves a ton of credit for his allegiance to Arizona.

He's played a ton of football in his time in Tucson, currently sitting at 91 career touchdown passes, but this season has been particularly consistent.
Fifita has thrown for 2,064 yards, 18 touchdowns, and only four interceptions this year, and has total command of this offense.

That experience is a big reason why I'm not too worried about the Wildcats going into a hostile environment in Lubbock.

The Wildcats rank 13th nationally in Pass Success Rate, and that should give Fifita plenty of opportunities against a Texas Tech defense sitting just 85th in Pass Success Rate allowed. WR Ismail Mizell leads Arizona with 493 receiving yards and five touchdowns, while RB Quali Reescano has added five scores on the ground.

I don't expect Arizona to run all over this Texas Tech defense. I do expect Fifita to be able to find matchups in the secondary and consistently move the chains through the air.

Defensively, Arizona might actually be the most underrated unit in this game.

The Wildcats are allowing only 16.7 points per game and rank 12th nationally in overall Success Rate allowed.
More importantly for this matchup, they're 21st in Rush Success Rate allowed and 10th in Pass Success Rate allowed.

That gives Arizona a legitimate answer for what Texas Tech does best.

Williams and the Red Raider ground game will undoubtedly make some plays, but Arizona has consistently prevented opponents from staying ahead of schedule. If the Wildcats can make Hammond throw the football in obvious passing situations, I like their chances of forcing a mistake or two.

Arizona vs Texas Tech Pick, Betting Analysis

Texas Tech is rightfully favored at home here, but I've got to take Arizona getting 3 and the hook.

I think this will ultimately be a coin flip game, and I trust Fifita much more than I do Hammond in crunch time.

This game obviously has major Big 12 and CFP ramifications, and both sides will prepare accordingly.

The Red Raiders have been an inconsistent bunch all year, while Arizona has been steady throughout, and I want to back the more reliable team in a game of this magnitude.

Give me the Wildcats as a road dog in a game I think they win outright. Bear Down.

Pick: Arizona +3.5
