Illinois Fighting Illini Betting Preview: Defense on the up After Letting Hauck Go
Whatever was said in the team room and whatever decisions were made, in addition to letting Bobby Hauck go after a 24-17 loss to Purdue, stuck with Illinois. Since then, the Illini are 2-0 with a huge upset win over Oregon. That win marks by far the best defensive effort from Illinois this season.
Hauck was a massive misfire. It was a perplexing move as the 62-year-old was lured away from one of the most stable positions as head coach of Montana. He stepped away in the offseason before taking over the Illinois defense. It's likely he regretted that choice almost right away given how poorly prepared this defense was and how quickly he was turned loose.
That defense smothered the Ducks, holding them to just two explosive plays and 44% of available yards gained.
But an offense that's been really solid for most of the year took a major hit when starting quarterback Katin Houser broke his hand. He's out for at least another month, and whether or not he returns this year is in significant doubt. In his place, Michael Clayton was held to 12-of-19 passing for just 84 yards in what was a very conservative approach by Barry Lunney Jr.
Expect Lunney to pivot to an effective run game that ranks 41st in EPA Per Rush and went for 225 yards on Oregon. The offensive line remains beat up, with two starters out (Champ Smith hasn't played since Week 4; TJ McMillen was lost for the season in September). Six other linemen have logged 240+ snaps this season.
Maryland Terrapins Betting Preview: Enough Talent for an Interim Bump?
Perhaps the most predictable result of a 0-5 skid capped by a 37-30 loss to Rutgers was Maryland firing head coach Mike Locksley. However, that firing didn't come before Locksley made one last move, relieving defensive coordinator Ted Monachino of his duties 48 hours earlier. Maryland had the bye to get its ducks in a row and rebound for the final five Big Ten games.
The offense only goes as far as Malik Washington goes. That's a fine place to be considering Washington is a very talented playmaker behind center, but with no help whatsoever, he's been mediocre, leading to a mediocre offense that ranks 81st in points per drive. There's no semblance of a run game, and receiver Chris Durr Jr. has accounted for nearly 36% of Washington's receiving production in a limited receiving room.
Maryland's defense has far more potential given a duo of stud pass rushers on Sidney Stewart (22 pressures) and Zion Elee (four sacks). Elee, a freshman, has been a stud since being unexpectedly thrust into a starting role after Zahir Mathis's season-ending injury. But that pass rush hasn't made enough of a difference to offset a below-average secondary and a downright terrible run defense.
The Terps rank in the bottom 10 nationally in tackling, alongside the likes of Colorado State and FAU.
There's enough talent on the roster for Maryland to get an interim bump — keep an eye on the possibility at home coming off a bye week. But that same talent could decide to pack it up and move on, given that the coach who recruited them is out.

Illinois vs Maryland Pick, Betting Analysis
So far, Maryland has been the sharp side at +3 and better — now sitting at +2.5. It has a super rest advantage coming off a bye and playing at home, plus Illinois scored a big win last week and could be in play for a sleepy letdown spot at noon. SECU Stadium has been notably empty this season, adding to a flat spot for both teams.
There are a few reasons I like the under on the point total here, despite the week sending it up.
Clayton hasn't been very impressive in his limited time filling in for Houser. By design, he's spent most of his passing attempts throwing it short of 10 yards, allowing the run game to do the brunt of the work. The Illini already ran a slow pace, but that pace has been even slower under Clayton (30.2 seconds between snaps last week was the 11th-slowest) — expect that to continue, as Lunney doesn't want to lean too much on Clayton.
The shake-up at coordinator, plus the extended time off, could have real benefits for this Maryland defense. It has the talent, largely exposed in long-run plays and in the secondary, but coaching has been poor. Expect the approach to change with the added time off.
Ultimately, I'm not impressed with the state either offense is in right now. Illinois' defense is an ascending commodity while Maryland's got the shakeup it needed. The Illini have done a good job limiting explosive plays through the air and improving their havoc rate, with seven TFLs against Oregon last week.
This is a totally flat spot for both teams.
Pick: Under 54.5 Points (Play to 52.5)
