Notre Dame Fighting Irish Betting Preview: Still A Chance to Make Some Noise

Notre Dame has had two weeks to sit around and think about the loss they suffered on the road at BYU on October 17th. The Irish had chances on both sides of the ball to make plays and take control, and for the first time this season, failed to do so.

This team will still have chances to make some noise nationally with ranked matchups remaining at home against Miami and SMU. The Irish now need to impress the CFP committee if this team intends to participate in the college football playoff this year, rather than being left out as they were last season.

The offense has an abundance of talent, starting at quarterback with CJ Carr, who has completed 67% of his passes. Carr has thrown 16 touchdowns this season against just one interception. The ground game has been less explosive this season, but Jonaz Walton and Nolan James Hr. have combined for 838 yards and 9 touchdowns while splitting carries.

The offensive line has played really well, allowing just two sacks and 16 tackles for loss through seven games, and Carr figures to have a clean pocket against Navy.

The receiver group is going to stress this Navy coverage unit as the Irish have several pass-receiving weapons. Jordan Faison leads the team with 451 receiving yards and four touchdown catches, while Micah Gilbert and Jaden Greathouse have also been reliable options.

ND often throws the ball out of the backfield to the running backs, and Janes has 13 receptions as a running back, including three receiving touchdowns. This is a dangerous group that Navy is going to struggle to cover.

The Notre Dame defense had created situations in which the stop unit was firmly in control of every game played this season until the loss at BYU. ND had allowed 11 points per game, and no team had run for more than 77 yards against this defense.

BYU was able to create advantages in the run game despite its best running back being out and the Cougars converted at a tremendously high level situationally. I expect this defense to have a better showing here against Navy.

Navy Midshipmen Betting Preview: Defense Letting Defense Down

Navy has struggled through a 2-5 start to the season, and while the offense was struggling to get going early, the last two weeks the defense has really let Navy down. The coverage unit continues to get shredded through the air, surrendering 87 points against UTSA and North Texas.

Navy has allowed back-to-back games with 74% completion, and the explosive plays allowed have been backbreaking. It wasn’t much better against Tulsa, FAU or UAB earlier in the season, as the Mids are allowing 9.7 yards per pass attempt this season. The pass rush has been marginal, but the talent just isn't there for Navy to register stops against competent passing attacks.

The offense has really played well the last three weeks with the ground attack clearly leading the way. Navy is rushing for over 300 yards per game on average, as quarterback Jackson Gutierrez is starting to take firm command of the offense. Gutierrez leads the Middies with 869 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns on the ground.

Other players such as Vic Listorti and Michael Barrow are finding their place in the modified Wing-T scheme, and the passing offense is coming around as well. This is a very different task going up against a team as talented as Notre Dame, and early-down execution will have to be sound for Navy to retain possession of the football and create scoring opportunities.

Notre Dame vs Navy Pick, Betting Analysis

This line opened with Notre Dame listed as 28.5-point favorites, and it has since been pushed out to -30.5. The total has been bet up from 51.5 on the early openers up to 57.5, where it currently sits. I laid the early number with Notre Dame and still support the position at the current number. I also like ND to exceed its team total, which is listed at 42.5.

Notre Dame scored on every possession but one in last year’s meeting with Navy, and the Mids have a substantially downgraded defense this season. Navy will not hold up in pass coverage here, and the explosive plays are coming for Notre Dame through the air in this one.

Navy ranks 134th nationally in pass-play explosiveness surrendered on defense and 115th in pass-play success rate. The secondary is not talented enough, and the pass rush is not effective enough to put pressure on CJ Carr, who I expect to throw for 300 yards for the first time this season.

Notre Dame has an excellent run defense, and this team saw Navy firsthand last season, fully shutting down the Middies' option attack while limiting Navy to 228 total yards on 55 plays.

This Navy offense is not nearly as explosive, and I am not confident it can move the ball four yards at a time against this ND defense. Quick possessions will prevent Navy from effectively flipping the field, and short fields for the Irish should lead to quick scoring drives.

Notre Dame’s defense is going to show up in this game, and I expect the run queues to be on point. Navy has thrown the ball more over the last couple of weeks, having trailed in the second half, and this is where the mistakes will show up.

Sacks, fumbles or interceptions will create sudden-change opportunities for ND, who should be able to blow this game open relatively easily. I will call it 51-13. Lay the number and take Notre Dame to go over its posted team total.

Pick: Notre Dame -30.5 | Notre Dame Team Total Over 42.5
