BYU Cougars Betting Preview: Strong Start

Three games, three sound wins for the BYU Cougars.

Entering Week 5 and fresh off an early bye, Kalani Sitake led his team to three covers against Utah Tech, Colorado State (on the road), and most impressively, Arizona.

The offense is about as efficient as you can ask for, checking in No. 1 in yards per play, No. 2 in success rate and No. 2 in yards per dropback.

QB Bear Bachmeier has emerged as a genuine star, and Sitaki hit on another dynamic freshman, receiver Legend Glasker.

LJ Martin is expectedly great, rushing for 176 yards and three scores on Colorado State before the bye.

All of this is possible thanks to an excellent offensive line loaded with all-conference talent like center Bruce Mitchell and tackle Paki Finau. What was expected to be the Big 12's best offensive line this summer is playing out like it is.

On the other side of the ball, BYU has swallowed opposing run games whole, holding all three opponents under 100 total yards on the ground.

For fans of physical, well-executed football, BYU is the team for you. Keep an eye on outside linebacker Tausili Akana, who logged 2.5 sacks on Noah Fifita in Week 2.

The entire second level is excellent, and the addition of Cal's Cade Uluave has been welcome to this veteran defense.

With Texas Tech showing some obvious limitations (specifically at quarterback), BYU is firmly in the driver's seat of one of the Big 12 Championship tickets.

Expect this team to be an underdog in conference play once — at arch rival Utah in what might be the Big 12 Game of the Year (Week 10).

TCU Horned Frogs Betting Preview: Schedule Working in Their Favor

The Ireland Loser Curse might be real. TCU joins the ranks of 2025 Kansas State, 2024 Florida State, and 2022 Nebraska as a team that's seriously disappointed after losing that Week 0 opener across the pond.

QB Jaden Craig isn't a power conference-caliber quarterback, ranking 11th in the Big 12 in passer rating while being handily outclassed against North Carolina and UCF — far from dominant and disruptive teams.

New offensive coordinator Gordon Sammis' offense has looked clean out of sorts. TCU ranks 109th in points per drive, 95th in success rate and an awful 133rd in yards per rush — the department Sammis is supposed to specialize in.

The Frogs don't get any push up front on offense (again, Sammis' specialty), and no one has any pop in the backfield.

Expect the sudden shift in system to take some time to mesh, but this is a poor start.

Fortunately, Andy Avalos' defense has played the part and made up for lost offensive production.

The team has yet to score more than 21 points in a game this season, though the cast of opposing attacks is less than admirable (North Carolina, Grambling State, Arkansas State and UCF without its starting QB).

Avalos continues to employ a defense that's aggressive, but this year, there's been an emphasis on limiting explosives by keeping everything in front of them.

But TCU has yet to face a single semi-competent offense; no team ranks better than 77th in points per drive this season.

TCU has an extremely favorable schedule, with very few times when its offensive ineptitude and possible fraudulence on defense could come back to bite it until November.

That is, except for Week 5 against BYU.

BYU vs TCU Pick, Betting Analysis

Given two slow-paced offenses, a big move toward the under wasn't a surprise. This total opened at 52.5 and was swiftly bet down to 47.5.

BYU re-opened as a -6.5 favorite this week and was nudged above -7, but that looked like a fake to come back on TCU +7. (Clearly there's respected early-week action on the Horned Frogs in what's expected to be a low-scoring affair.)

For the last two games, Craig has been asked to shoulder a majority of the offensive load for TCU. The Frogs ran for a paltry 33 yards against UCF, thanks in part to Craig taking too many big sacks.

His receivers offer no help (11 drops through four games), but Craig has made some pretty gigantic mistakes in the young season (mistakes that shouldn't happen from a fifth-year senior).

The issue for TCU is that it's now playing out of its system. Sammis is a wide zone-based play caller that prefers condensed formations and under center sets.

Sonny Dykes famously runs tempo spread offenses with lots of option and passing. Now, Dykes' voice is winning out.

Craig is throwing way too much, but TCU still plays with the 108th-fastest tempo in the country. What transpires is an offense with no rhythm, no urgency, and not enough playmakers to offset either of those problems.

BYU also plays with a slow pace, but it's an incredibly efficient offense with a variety of lethal playmakers.

TCU's defense is also propped up by playing atrocious competition. I believe there's a disconnect between what the coaching staff wants, what its players are capable of, and where this team is headed for the remainder of 2026.

Another bye sits on the horizon, and BYU has the rest advantage.

I side with the superior team.

Pick: BYU -6.5 (Play to -7)
