Cal Golden Bears
The Tosh Lupoi era began with a whimper. Tied 24-24 heading into the fourth quarter at home against UCLA, the Golden Bears fell apart on both sides of the ball and gave up 21 unanswered points.
Lupoi has many impressive things on his resume, beginning with a successful playing career at Cal before joining the Nick Saban coaching tree and the NFL. His final stop before returning home to Cal came as Oregon's defensive coordinator.
But this is his first attempt as a head coach at any level, and with that comes growing pains.
To ease his transition, superstar quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele returned, surprising many who assumed he would be the transfer portal's biggest prize.
JKS is a sensational arm talent, but he can be turnover-prone at times. He totaled nine interceptions last season and already threw two in Cal's loss last week.
More concerning than Sagapolutele's mistakes, though, was Lupoi's defense. UCLA ran all over the Bears, amassing 277 total rushing yards on 32 carries. That's a bad omen for a first-time head coach whose entire calling card has been defense.
And now his team has a 2,782-mile trip east to regroup for.
Syracuse Orange
Fran Brown hopes to rediscover the magic from two seasons ago — when Brown finished the season 20th in the AP Poll and earned 10 victories — in Year 3 with the Orange.
The key may be as simple as keeping his quarterback healthy. Former Notre Dame backup Steve Angeli began last season on a heater, throwing for 1,317 yards in just four healthy games before a torn Achilles ended his campaign.
Angeli is back healthy now, and was nearly perfect in Syracuse's 66-3 win over New Hampshire in Week 1, throwing for 263 yards and three touchdowns to zero picks.
Zero picks is a key theme for Angeli, who's incredibly mistake-resistant. In four partial seasons, Angeli has only thrown three career interceptions on 265 attempts. Syracuse was 3-1 with Angeli under center last year, including a road win over Clemson.
The Orange went 0-8 down the stretch without him last year, although that's hard to hold against Brown.
Flanking Angeli in the backfield is a two-headed duo of running backs with promise. Freshman Shavane Anderson Jr. popped for 102 yards on 10 attempts and three touchdowns in Week 1, and sophomore Tylik Hill wasn't far behind with 16 carries for 91 yards and a score of his own.
Cal's defense is far ahead of New Hampshire's, but it bodes well for Cuse that it has a tandem capable of replicating UCLA's success on the ground.
Cal vs Syracuse Pick, Betting Analysis
Add it all up, and there are plenty of reasons to back the home team here.
A brand new head coach, whose best unit struggled mightily in Week 1, embarking on one of the longest road trips the sport can offer against an offense with multiple weapons.
If Cal can keep the game within striking distance, Angeli's ball security could prove the difference, especially if Sagapolutele is forced to try to win it with big throws under pressure.
There are just too many ways for Syracuse to create separation here. Back the Orange.
