Duke vs Illinois College Football Preview
Duke Blue Devils
Duke was so successful last season that the College Football Playoff had to issue a new amendment, mandating that any team that wins the ACC can't be left out of the CFP again.
That may be too little too late for Manny Diaz, as it looks like Duke will have a bit of a rebuild on its hands offensively.
Much of Duke’s production from last season is gone, headlined by the late exit of Darian Mensah, who many in Durham expected to return. The replacement quarterback role fell to former San Jose State QB Walker Eget, who brings a big reputation.
Eget threw for over 3,000 yards in 2025 for the Spartans, but it wasn’t as pretty in Week 1’s win over Tulane. Eget completed just 13-of-26 passes for 131 yards, with a long completion of just 26 yards.
Luckily for Eget, the one key returnee Diaz was able to keep his hands on is superstar running back Nate Sheppard. He finished Second Team All-ACC last season, and it appears the Blue Devils’ plan this year is to redefine the limits of “workhorse,” at least based on Sheppard’s performance in Week 1.
The sophomore stud totaled 227 yards on 35 carries and recorded Duke’s only two touchdowns. He also matched the team-high in receptions with three catches on the day.
It will be a tall task for Sheppard to do it all by himself for Duke this season, although revenge against Illinois will be a fun opportunity for him. His lowest total yards of the season came against the Illini in last year’s blowout loss.
The Duke defense was stellar in Week 1, and set the tone physically against an overmatched Tulane team. It remains to be seen whether that will translate against an opponent of Illinois' caliber.
Illinois Fighting Illini
Duke isn’t the only team in this matchup with plenty to replace. The biggest name to watch in this matchup may not even be a player — it may be new Illinois defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck.
Hauck departed his role as head coach of Montana to take over for Aaron Henry at Illinois, and he immediately deployed the 3-3-5 scheme he ran to great success for years.
Hauck’s Griz finished top-20 in scoring defense in three of the last five seasons, while finishing third nationally in turnovers forced in all of the FCS.
It’s a fast, physical defense that places emphasis on the secondary, which should play into this Illinois team’s strengths. The Illini replace all of their interior stars but return star corner Xavier Scott.
The only problem? It looked awful in Week 1. Illinois gave up 413 total yards to UAB, with 194 of those coming on the ground on a whopping 48 attempts. And that looms large with Sheppard entering the building.
A closer look at both the tape and the box score reveals that the new-look Illinois defense may not be as bad as it seemed at first glance. UAB converted 13-of-23 third- and fourth-down conversion attempts, and some positive regression there would do the Illini well.
Additionally, most of the miscues in Week 1 were simply missed tackles and not schematic breakdowns. In other words, the problems seem fixable.
On the other end of the field, Illinois looked the part with new quarterback Katin Houser under center. Houser threw for over 5,300 yards in his past two seasons and has pinpoint accuracy. He finished 13-of-17 with three touchdowns and no picks in his Illini debut.
If this game comes down to a big play from the man under center, Illinois has a decisive advantage.

Duke vs Illinois Pick, Betting Analysis
While Diaz surely has some revenge on his mind here, it’s going to be a tall task for his Duke team to avenge last year’s loss to the Illini.
The game plan will surely be to force-feed Sheppard, and it'll task the Illini defense with taking better angles in space and plugging the gaps up front. But Duke won’t have a strong advantage in the trenches, and Sheppard won’t be able to run rampant all on his own.
If they can keep Sheppard in check, the new-look 3-3-5 scheme will force Eget to make plays with his arm, and he simply didn't look the part in Week 1. Meanwhile, Illinois' Houser did.
A few Duke turnovers into the hands of Scott would be a bonus, but Illinois should pull away with a statement victory at home.
Pick: Illinois -6 (Play to -7)
