Georgia Tech vs Pitt College Football Preview
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Betting Preview: Offense Showing Life
Georgia Tech heads to Pittsburgh at 2-5 following an embarrassing 49-27 loss to Boston College, and while I'm not particularly interested in blindly chasing last week's 76-point explosion, the Yellow Jackets' defensive performance exposed some serious problems that could carry over into Saturday.
Boston College generated 399 rushing yards on 47 attempts, averaging an absurd 8.5 YPC, including 278 rushing yards in the second half alone.
It’s been a disastrous season for a Georgia Tech defense that has struggled to consistently win at the line of scrimmage.
The Yellow Jackets are allowing 210.4 rushing YPG, ranking 131st nationally, while surrendering 30.3 PPG and 407.6 total YPG.
The underlying efficiency numbers aren't any prettier. Georgia Tech is allowing approximately +0.24 EPA/Play with a 46.3% defensive Success Rate, while generating Havoc on just 11.4% of opposing snaps.
That's a brutal combination against an offense capable of sustaining possessions without relying exclusively on explosive plays. And the injury situation has made matters worse.
Georgia Tech was missing eight defensive players who have started games this season against Boston College, leaving HC Brent Key with a depleted unit overall.
The offense, meanwhile, has shown enough production to contribute to this total. QB Alberto Mendoza has thrown for 1,714 yards and 10 TDs, while WR Jordan Allen has recorded 24 receptions for 304 yards over his last three games.
WR Dalen Penson has also emerged as a legitimate receiving threat, totaling 174 yards over his last two contests.
Georgia Tech is averaging 255.3 passing YPG, ranking 41st nationally, and that becomes particularly important against a Pittsburgh secondary that's been considerably more vulnerable through the air than on the ground.
I expect the Jackets offense to show up, but their defensive struggles will also continue, even against a backup QB.

Pitt Panthers Betting Preview: Holden On
Pittsburgh's offense looks considerably different following QB Mason Heintschel's season-ending ACL injury, but I'm not convinced the Panthers are suddenly incapable of producing points.
QB Holden Geriner has taken over the offense, and although there have been some growing pains, he showed improvement against Miami last weekend.
Geriner finished with a career-high 268 passing yards and a TD without an INT against the Hurricanes. That's encouraging considering the level of competition.
The Panthers also got production from freshman QB Corey Dailey, who completed all three of his passes for 66 yards, including a 49-yard TD to WR Cam Sapp.
Pittsburgh's offensive personnel remains considerably better than its recent results suggest. WR Cataurus Hicks has been outstanding, recording 284 receiving yards and two TDs over his last two games.
Hicks now leads Pitt with 31 receptions for 649 yards and five TDs, giving Geriner a legitimate downfield weapon against a Georgia Tech defense that's struggled to consistently generate pressure.
The rushing matchup is also juicy as RB Damon Ferguson Jr. has rushed for 477 yards while averaging 5.2 YPC, and the Panthers are averaging 153.5 rushing YPG. That production should translate against a Georgia Tech defense allowing more than 210 rushing YPG.
Pitt is also averaging 444.3 total YPG and 31.6 PPG, which suggests the offensive ceiling remains respectable even after the QB change. I don’t think the dropoff from Heintschel is that significant, and any offense is capable of moving the ball on Georgia Tech.

Georgia Tech vs Pitt Pick, Betting Analysis
This total opened around 52.5 before moving toward 53.5, and I'm willing to follow the move despite Pittsburgh's QB situation. The biggest mismatch is Pitt's offense against Georgia Tech's defense.
The Yellow Jackets rank 131st in rushing defense, allowing 210.4 YPG, while generating a defensive Success Rate allowed of 46.3% and Havoc on just 11.4% of opposing snaps.
Pittsburgh doesn't need Geriner to replicate Heintschel's early-season production to take advantage of this matchup. The Panthers need to establish Ferguson on early downs, create manageable third downs, and give Geriner opportunities to attack downfield against a defense that's been decimated by injuries.
The other side is where I think this Over becomes particularly attractive.
Pittsburgh ranks second nationally in rushing defense, allowing just 65 YPG, but the Panthers are surrendering 266.3 passing YPG, ranking 127th.
That creates an obvious path for Mendoza to generate production through the air. More passing will equate to less clock bleeding.
Georgia Tech's WR corps has also been playing considerably better, with Allen and Penson combining for nearly 480 receiving yards over their recent stretches.
I'm not expecting the Yellow Jackets to consistently establish the ground game against Pitt's defensive front, but they shouldn't need to if Mendoza can attack the secondary.
There's also an attractive game-script angle.
Pittsburgh has the rushing advantage to consistently move the chains, while Georgia Tech's defensive deficiencies could force the Yellow Jackets into a more aggressive passing approach.
I'll trust the offensive matchups rather than overreact to Pitt’s recent offensive performances.
Pick: Over 53.5
