Marshall vs JMU College Football Preview
I’m taking the points with Marshall and buying low here.
Everybody saw that fourth quarter against Gardner‑Webb, and I’m not going to sugarcoat it: Gardner‑Webb is a middling FCS team. What were the Herd doing, needing a last‑second field goal to win that game?
That ugly finish has driven the price up more than it should, as I make this one closer to two touchdowns. We're getting this past the key number of 17 and past 18.5.
Well, Marshall still has a quality offense. Carlos Del Rio‑Wilson is reportedly 100% healthy, and last week he had 413 yards and three touchdowns through the air, along with 48 yards on the ground. He remains the rushing threat he was last season.
On defense, this is still Year 1 under Brad Lambert returning as coordinator and a blend toward a 3‑3‑5 identity. The Herd brought in a lot of transfers, and that takes time to gel. That’s important context you can’t ignore after one or two weird games.
G6 teams often take paychecks and get pounded — like Marshall did at Penn State — then follow with a weird letdown against an FCS opponent. That looked like a team that was eyeballing the upcoming Sun Belt East game and nearly got caught, but it pulled out the win anyway.
Meanwhile, James Madison’s 46‑20 win over Old Dominion looked impressive on paper, but there’s nuance.
The Dukes were facing ODU’s backup quarterback and benefited from multiple short fields. That padded the offensive numbers and makes JMU look better than it actually is.

Marshall vs JMU Pick, Betting Analysis
I think Marshall has the right balance of pass and run to move the ball and put up points.
I don’t hate taking the Herd beyond three scores, especially with a quarterback I trust in conference play. If you rewind five weeks, this might’ve been a JMU spread of -6.5 or -7. The market moved too aggressively off a one‑week lookahead spot.
Realistically, with some mix of sustained drives and maybe a little turnover luck, Marshall can be in this game into the fourth quarter.
The current line implies it won’t even be within spitting distance by then. That’s too aggressive given what we believed about this roster in the preseason.
Pick: Marshall +18.5
