Minnesota vs Indiana College Football Preview
Minnesota Golden Gophers Betting Preview
Minnesota heads to Bloomington at 5-2 following an emotional 13-10 victory over Iowa, and while P.J. Fleck deserves credit for getting the Golden Gophers back into the Big Ten conversation, I'm having a difficult time trusting this offense to keep pace with Indiana.
QB Drake Lindsey completed just 14-of-26 passes for 137 yards and an INT against the Hawkeyes, while Minnesota struggled to generate anything resembling a consistent rushing attack.
The Gophers managed to win a physical, low-scoring game, but that offensive formula becomes considerably less appealing when you're facing a team capable of creating separation through both its passing attack and defensive front.
Lindsey has thrown for 1,472 yards, nine TDs and six INTs this season, averaging just 6.2 YPA.
WR Javon Tracy leads Minnesota with 39 receptions for 420 yards, while RB TJ Thomas Jr. has rushed for 327 yards on 58 attempts.
The problem is that Minnesota hasn't consistently demonstrated the ability to generate explosives when forced into obvious passing situations.
The Gophers are converting just 33.7% of their third downs, ranking 113th nationally, and that becomes particularly concerning against an Indiana defense allowing only a 33.1% conversion rate.
Minnesota's defense has been considerably more reliable, allowing 288.7 YPG, including just 165.1 passing YPG, but there's a significant difference between containing Iowa and slowing down an Indiana offense with multiple legitimate playmakers.
The Gophers have also struggled away from home, surrendering 41 points to Purdue and 38 to Mississippi State earlier this season. After an emotional win last week against Iowa, this is an awful spot for them.
Those performances raise questions about how well this defense will travel against a top-five opponent, and I think the Hoosiers offense presents far too difficult of a matchup. We saw Kamario Taylor carve up this defense earlier in the year, and I do not see why the Hoosiers can’t do the same given the amount of talent they have at the skill positions.
Indiana Hoosiers Betting Preview
Indiana is coming off an ugly 13-6 overtime victory over Michigan, and I'm willing to buy low on Curt Cignetti's offense after consecutive difficult matchups against Ohio State and Michigan.
QB Josh Hoover completed just 8-of-18 passes for 81 yards and an INT against the Wolverines, but I'm not particularly interested in treating that performance as an accurate representation of Indiana's offensive ceiling.
Hoover has thrown for 1,741 yards, 18 TDs and just one INT this season, while completing 62% of his passes.
His recent production has been affected by an injury sustained against Ohio State, although Cignetti expects him to be healthier this week. I have a small inkling he is not 100% healthy, but I do not think that will matter here against the Gophers.
That's an important development because Indiana's passing attack becomes considerably more dangerous when Hoover can consistently attack downfield. WR Charlie Becker has recorded 42 receptions for 726 yards and eight TDs, while RB Turbo Richard has rushed for 711 yards on 106 carries, averaging 6.7 YPC.
That combination gives Indiana the balance necessary to prevent Minnesota from simply sitting back and forcing Hoover to throw down in the flat, or underneath. The Hoosiers also have the defensive personnel to create negative plays without sacrificing coverage, and S Amare Ferrell has recorded three INTs over his last two games.
Against a Minnesota offense already struggling on third down, those defensive advantages could produce repeated short fields. I have a hard time envisioning the Gophers offense scoring much here, which leads me to believe we only need 28-31 points to get an easy cover here.

Minnesota vs Indiana Pick, Betting Analysis
Indiana opened around -22.5 before the market moved toward -20.5, and I'm willing to lay -19.5 with some shops having that available.
The move toward Minnesota is understandable considering Indiana's recent offensive performances, but I think the market may be overreacting to the Hoosiers scoring just 15 points against Ohio State and 13 against Michigan. Those are considerably more difficult defensive matchups, and I am willing to bet Cignetti shows out at home here.
The most important development is Hoover's health. Cignetti has acknowledged that his QB wasn't operating at full capacity, and if Hoover looks more comfortable against Minnesota, Indiana has the personnel to generate explosives through Becker and Marsh, and establish the ground game with Richard.
Minnesota's offensive limitations also create a clear path towards a cover. The Gophers rank 113th in third-down conversion rate, while Indiana's defense ranks 31st in third-down conversion rate allowed.
That's difficult for an underdog trying to sustain possessions and keep an explosive opponent off the field. I don’t see it happening.
Minnesota has also scored just 13 points in each of its last two games away from home, including a 41-13 loss to Purdue.
There's a reasonable situational concern with Indiana coming off an emotional overtime win, but I'm not particularly interested in fading Cignetti simply because his team played a physical game against Michigan.
Indiana returns home with College GameDay in Bloomington and an opportunity to strengthen its playoff resume. If Hoover is healthier and the Hoosiers generate the defensive stops I expect, Minnesota could struggle to reach double digits.
As I said, I think we only need 28-31 points from Indiana to easily cover.
Pick: Indiana -20.5 (-110)
