Kent State won zero games in 2024 and five in 2025. The interim coach who engineered that turnaround kept the job, and now the Golden Flashes face the most unusual travel schedule in the MAC.

Where Kent State stands

The Kenni Burns era ended badly and abruptly. He went 1-23 across two seasons, including 0-12 in 2024 and a 1-11 campaign in 2023 that produced the worst record in college football. Kent State fired him in April 2025, not for the record but for multiple contract violations involving credit card expenditures and the mishandling of loans from a school booster.

Mark Carney inherited the wreckage as interim head coach with three weeks until fall camp. He had joined the program as tight ends coach in January 2023, moved to offensive coordinator in 2024, and had never been a head coach anywhere. The school removed the interim tag on Oct. 30, naming him the 24th head coach in program history.

He earned it. Kent State finished 5-7 with a 4-4 conference record, its first .500 MAC mark since 2022. The five-game improvement was the second-largest turnaround in program history and the fourth-largest in the country.

Five players earned All-MAC honors: Da'Realyst Clark, CJ Young, Jamond Mathis, Cade Wolford and Mason Woods. Clark took MAC Specialist of the Year after returning two kickoffs for touchdowns, including the game-winner in the season opener against Merrimack.

Continuity carries into 2026 for the first time in years. Clay Patterson returns for a third season on offense and Cherokee Valeria for a second on defense. Kent State also added Josh Cribbs, the program's most famous alumnus and one of the most prolific return specialists in NFL history, as a special teams analyst.

The MAC in 2026

Northern Illinois left for the Mountain West and Sacramento State moved up from the FCS, leaving 13 football members. Sacramento State is ineligible for the postseason this season under FCS-to-FBS transition rules.

Kent State's non-conference slate is punishing. The Golden Flashes open at South Carolina on Sept. 5, host FCS Wofford, then travel to No. 1 Ohio State on Sept. 19. A road trip to South Florida on Oct. 17 makes three games against opponents from stronger conferences.

The Oct. 30 game is the outlier of the entire MAC season. Kent State flies to Sacramento State for a Friday night kickoff at 10:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2. That is roughly 2,400 miles for a conference road game, in a league whose geographic footprint has always been the Midwest, against an opponent that cannot reach the postseason.

The schedule then closes with three consecutive Tuesday games: at Bowling Green on Nov. 10, home against Miami of Ohio on Nov. 17, and at Eastern Michigan on Nov. 24.

The market has to weigh a five-win improvement against the reality of where it started.

The case for continued progress is genuine. Carney kept both coordinators, which almost never happens for a first-year head coach who began as an interim, and the roster produced five all-conference players from a team that had gone winless the year before. A staff working its second full offseason together is a meaningful upgrade over one assembled in August.

The case for caution is the schedule and the base rate. Two Power Four road games plus South Florida means three near-certain losses before conference play is settled, and 5-7 from 0-12 already captured most of the available improvement. Getting to six wins requires beating MAC opponents on the road in November, on short weeks.

The Sacramento State trip complicates it further. A cross-country flight for a Friday night game, sandwiched between the Akron rivalry and the Tuesday closing stretch, is the kind of scheduling burden that does not appear in any power rating.

A point spread bet turns on margin of victory rather than who wins.

Return touchdowns are among the highest-variance scoring plays in football, and they affect margins disproportionately. A team that scores twice on returns in a season is converting field position into points in a way that power ratings, which are built on yards and efficiency, systematically undervalue. For a program likely to be an underdog in most games, that is precisely the kind of edge that turns non-covers into covers.

Three consecutive weeknight games at Bowling Green, home against Miami of Ohio and at Eastern Michigan all fall in the thinnest pricing environment in college football. Weeknight MAC markets open later, attract less action and move on smaller amounts of money, so books disagree with each other more.
