Kent State vs Western Michigan College Football Preview
This game checks every box in the Road Dog With Wind framework.
Kent State is a true road underdog getting double digits; the spread sits squarely in the range the system targets; the total is capped at a modest 42.5, so a shootout is off the table; and the Golden Flashes are coming off a short losing streak against a market that has soured on them.
Then there's the environment. A northeast breeze of 5 to 7 mph is forecast for Kalamazoo, with a chance of showers late in the afternoon, exactly the kind of element that works against a favorite trying to stretch a lead. Even a steady wind makes deep shots and long field goals less reliable, and it nudges a game toward the ground, where the clock runs and possessions shrink.
For a Western Michigan offense that already averages under 17 points against FBS opponents and leans on a quarterback averaging 6.5 yards per attempt, anything that trims the explosive plays makes it harder to build the kind of margin a 13.5-point spread demands. The conditions don't hand Kent State anything, but they push the game toward the low-scoring, one-score script the dog needs.
The matchup is more encouraging than a 13-point spread suggests. Western Michigan has not shown it can turn a talent edge into margin: the Broncos' only two FBS wins this season came by seven points at Rice and three at Buffalo, and they failed to cover in both as a favorite.
A team that scores 20 at Buffalo and 28 at Rice isn't built to run up the score on anyone, and with a total of 42.5, the market is telling you it doesn't expect a rout either. For Western Michigan to cover 13.5, it would need to score in the high 20s or 30s against a Kent State defense that just held Ohio to 13, and the Broncos' own recent scoring history says that's a stretch.
Kent State's path is straightforward. It doesn't have to do anything different to cover here.
The Golden Flashes need to do what they did against Ohio: keep DeShields upright, rely on Clark and Banks to make plays on a handful of explosive downs, lean on King in short-yardage, and play a field-position game that keeps the final margin tight.
A low-possession game keeps the underdog's margin for error wide, and a low total with a hook on the spread is the ideal setting for that. The risk is real.
These two met last year, and Western Michigan won 52-21, covering as a 19.5-point favorite. Kent State's offense can go stretches without producing, as it did in the loss to Ohio State. DeShields' turnovers are a real concern, since a short field off a turnover is the quickest way for a favorite to cover.
However, getting 13.5 points with a defense that has been better than its reputation and a favorite that has failed to cover its last two times laying a number is a spot with real value on the dog.
Pick:Kent State +13.5
