Sacramento State Hornets 2026 Season Preview

Sacramento State plays its first FBS season in 2026 after 33 years in the FCS, and the school paid heavily. It cost $18 million to join the MAC, $5 million to the NCAA, and no share of conference revenue for five years.

The Hornets went 7-5 last season in the Big Sky under Brennan Marion, who left after one year to become Colorado's offensive coordinator. That record barely helps you read prices for the 2026 college football season, because the competition is a level up and the roster has almost completely turned over.

Alonzo Carter took over in December, his first head coaching job at this level, and brought in two new coordinators, Eric Kiesau on offense and Adam Clark on defense.

Carson Conklin starts at quarterback. He was Sacramento State's freshman star in 2024, transferred to Fresno State when Marion rebuilt the roster, then came back this offseason. Around him almost everything is new: nine starters return, 27 transfers arrived, and one analyst ranked the Hornets 131st of 138 teams in returning production. Defense is the stronger half, with 38 sacks last year and Xavier Williams and the top three linebackers back.

A total, or over/under, is a bet on the points both teams score combined.

Sadly any stats from last season could be a trap. Marion's offense ran constantly, gaining 262.6 yards a game on the ground and only 163 through the air, and the Hornets threw fewer than ten passes in several games.

That style burns clock and keeps scores down. Marion has gone, Kiesau is installing something different, and Conklin was a big-play passer the last time he played here. If books build early totals from last year's running numbers and this offense throws instead, the number and the team will not match for weeks.

Prices and lins will be all over the place till we and the sportsbooks can get a proper read on the Hornets. If they're bad blowouts will raise that over massivley. If they're comptetive the under could hold value.

A total priced unevenly, say -120 on the over and +100 on the under, shows where the money has gone rather than which side is right. Our ticket and money percentages separate bet counts from dollars. The quarterback Conklins market rests on two seasons that point in opposite directions. Conklin averaged 11.0 yards per pass as a freshman here and 3.7 at Fresno State, and neither came in the offense he is about to run. Expect books to disagree on his numbers early and expect low pricws until there is something to go on.

Running back is the deeper market but harder to read. Jamar Curtis leads a crowded room after an ankle injury limited him to four games last season, with Davion Godley and Elias Brown also in the rotation, so the markets post but the workload split is unsettled. Receiving props are thinnest, with only three upperclassmen among 14 receivers.

A futures bet settles at the end of the season, not after one game.

Sac State's win total is 4.5, with the under at -105, and you bet whether the Hornets win more or less than five games.

Their conference title price is tafhe longest in the league at around +3500, unsurprising being the new kid on the block. with Miami (OH), Western Michigan and Toledo leading between +350 and +400.

Oddsmakers are pricing a first-time head coach, two new coordinators, 27 transfers and a quarterback whose two seasons look nothing alike, against opponents who have mostly never played the Hornets. That does not make the numbers too high or too low, it makes them less settled, which is why books disagree more here than almost anywhere.

Sac State Hornets Conference - Mid-American

The MAC has 13 teams in 2026. Northern Illinois left for the Mountain West and Sacramento State replaced it. The Hornets are the league's only team in the Pacific time zone, around 2,200 miles from their nearest conference opponent. Our team pages cover the rest of the league.

One rule change in June reshaped what is on the table. The NCAA lifted the two-year postseason ban on teams moving up from the FCS, so the Hornets can reach the MAC Championship Game and a bowl this season rather than in 2028.
