2024 Wyoming Cowboys Football

The Wyoming Cowboys are preparing for a new era under first-year head coach Jay Sawvel. Sawvel succeeds Craig Bohl, who retired after his last season in a decade at Laramie.

The Cowboys are coming off their highest win total (nine) since they were a member of the WAC in 1996. Wyoming was able to cap off a special season with a narrow victory over 11-win Toledo in the Arizona Bowl, 16-15.

Sawvel took over as defensive coordinator in the 2020 season and saw a ton of success, which should continue to translate as HC. After a rocky start to his tenure, Bohl built a program that prioritized defense and running the ball and was tough in the trenches. We should expect a lot of the same under Sawvel.

On offense, 2023 leading rusher Harrison Waylee is back in Laramie and will look to build off his 947 yard campaign. There are plenty of questions in the passing game as 2023 quarterback Andrew Peasley graduated and signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent. Additionally, the Cowboys' top three receivers have moved on.

On defense, Aaron Bohl, Craig's son, will oversee Sawvel's defensive coordinator duties. He'll undoubtedly have a tough time replicating the success from 2023, where the Cowboys only relinquished 22 points per game. However, the defensive line should be a point of strength as All-Mountain West performer Jordan Bertagnole returns as an interior DL. Moreover, Wyatt Ekeler will return in the backend as one of the conference's top safeties from a year ago.

Wyoming enters the 2024 season with a win total of 6.5. Oddsmakers view the Cowboys as a middling team in the Mountain West with consensus odds of +1400 to win the conference, which is good for 6th best out of 12 teams.

Wyoming Cowboys Point Spreads

The Cowboys were a solid team against the spread in 2023, as they went 7-5-1. For new football bettors, this means Wyoming beat the spread oddsmakers made at nearly a 54% win rate. Let's break down an example below:

The Wyoming Cowboys took down the Fresno State Bulldogs in this matchup a year ago, 24-19, as 5.5-point underdogs. This means they covered the spread effortlessly. In order to cover the spread, the Cowboys would need to lose by five points or fewer or win outright.

Wyoming Cowboys Over/Unders

Over/under bets deal with the totals set by the oddsmakers. Unlike point spread wagers, totals have nothing to do with the game's outcome. Sportsbooks set a total, which is the expected combined points scored by both teams.

In the example above, the closing total was set at 43.5. This matchup had a combined 43 points, which means the under cashed.

Wyoming Cowboys Moneylines

Betting on a moneyline is one of the more straightforward bet types. When you wager on a moneyline, you bet on the winner - point differential does not matter.

When you wager on a moneyline, it is easiest to think of them in $10 or $100 units. For example, Wyoming was +180 against Fresno State last year. This means a $100 wager on the Cowboys would net $180. On the other hand, a $100 bet on a -180 favorite would only win $55.56.

Wyoming Cowboys Futures

The Cowboys hold +100000 consensus odds for winning the 2024-2025 National Championship.

This bet type is what we call a futures bet.

Futures are bets that settle at a later time. The most common futures bets are based on season outcomes such as National Championship, Conference Championship, Heisman winners, or betting on a season-long win total.
