Ohio Bobcats Betting Preview

Ohio comes into Kent at 2-2, and the top-line numbers look good on the surface. 35 points on 301 rushing yards in the most recent win over Stonehill, part of a stretch that's seen the Bobcats score 29, 36, and 35 points over their last three games. Dig one level deeper, though, and the picture gets murkier.

Two of those three outbursts came against Jacksonville State and Stonehill, not exactly murderers' row for a program trying to establish itself as a MAC contender, which makes it fair to wonder how much of that 189.5-rushing-yards-a-game average is a true weekly floor versus a handful of schedule-inflated performances. Saturday is Ohio's first true conference road test of the season, a different kind of environment than the one that produced those gaudy numbers.

The engine of this offense is a two-headed backfield. Duncan Brune, who rushed for 585 yards and eight touchdowns a year ago at 4.9 yards a carry, is spelled by UConn transfer Victor Rosa, who brings 1,341 career rushing yards of his own. That combination is the single biggest threat on the field Saturday, and it's built to attack exactly the kind of run defense Kent State has shown this season.

What gets lost in a conversation built entirely around Ohio's rushing attack is that the Bobcats have to line up on defense too, and that's a unit with a real hole right now. DJ Walker, Ohio's star safety and a two-time defensive captain who racked up 61 tackles a year ago, is currently banged up and a legitimate question mark for Saturday.

Walker is the single most disruptive piece of Ohio's secondary, and his absence or limited availability would open real room for Kent State to work through the air against a thinner defensive backfield than the Bobcats are used to trotting out.

Kent State Golden Flashes Betting Preview

Kent State is also 2-2, and the Golden Flashes just took care of business in their MAC opener, beating Ball State 26-13 — a result that carries more weight than it might look like on paper, since conference play is where both of these seasons actually get decided.

Kent State is undefeated at home so far, and that's not a throwaway detail; it has looked like a different team in front of its own crowd than on the road, and the Golden Flashes have covered the spread in four of their last five games at Dix Stadium.

The obvious concern for Kent State sits on defense, where the Golden Flashes have given up 527 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns through four games, a run-defense profile that ranks in the back third of the country.

Defensive linemen Thomas Aden and Mohammed Hazime hold down the interior, with linebackers Rocco Nicholl and Sayed Abuhamdeh responsible for cleaning up anything that gets through. They're a group that's had its rough nights but hasn't been overwhelmed to the point of complete collapse.

Kent State has stayed competitive enough to sit 2-2 despite the yardage given up, which says something about its ability to bend without fully breaking.

On the other side of the ball, quarterback Dru DeShields has a couple of reliable options to work with in wide receiver Da'Realyst Clark and tight end Terik Mulder, while Mason King provides a legitimate complementary run threat out of the backfield. It's enough balance to keep Ohio's front from simply selling out against the pass.

There's also a freshman worth knowing on the defensive side. Cornerback Lennox Lemon, rated the sixth-best prospect in the state of Ohio in this year's recruiting class, has been thrown into the fire early and gives the Golden Flashes a genuine difference-maker in coverage, even in a secondary that's still finding its footing.

He won't single-handedly fix Kent State's run-defense issues, but he's exactly the kind of individual talent who can turn a 15-yard gain into a shorter gain, or come up with the kind of momentum-swinging pass breakup that keeps a home crowd in the game.

Ohio vs Kent State Pick, Betting Analysis

Ohio has opened as a 3-to-5.5-point road favorite depending on the book, with the total sitting between 50.5 and 51.5. That's a notably modest number for a team that just scored 35 points and ran for over 300 yards in its last outing.

It's a sign the market isn't treating Ohio's three-game scoring surge as proof of a blowout in the making. A team that just dropped 35 on an FCS-level Stonehill squad, being only a field-goal favorite on the road against a 2-2 conference opponent, reflects real uncertainty in how this one is expected to play out, not a Bobcats team that's clearly the better side.

This isn't simply "Ohio's offense versus Kent State's defense." It's a game where Ohio's own defense is dealing with a notable absence at a key position in DJ Walker; Kent State has individual pieces in DeShields, Clark, King, and Lemon capable of making winning plays on both sides of the ball, and the Golden Flashes get to lean on all of that in front of a crowd that's been a genuine home-field edge all season.

That's a fuller picture than Ohio's last three box scores suggest on their own, and it's where the value in the spread lies.

Back the Golden Flashes.

Pick: Kent State +3.5
