Old Dominion Monarchs Betting Preview: One Dimensional Offense

Old Dominion is 1-3 and coming off a 46-20 home loss to James Madison, and I don’t expect it to get any better moving forward. The underlying offensive numbers somehow look worse.

ODU ranks dead last nationally with a 31% Success Rate while generating -0.10 EPA/Play, and the Monarchs have been particularly awful on standard downs, where their 29.9% Success Rate ranks 138th.

This is a bad football team, folks.

QB Quinn Henicle has thrown for 418 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions while also leading the team with 224 rushing yards. The problem is, the offense has become far too dependent on him creating something out of nothing.

The offensive line is the matchup I want to fade. ODU is allowing Havoc on 24.3% of its snaps and has surrendered 4.5 sacks per game, both sitting near the bottom of the FBS.

Now it gets a Georgia State defense that just piled up six sacks against Northern Illinois. This could be a long day for the Monarchs' offense.

ODU also turned it over twice, committed 13 penalties, and somehow finished with minus-14 rushing yards against JMU last week. This team is a complete train wreck.

Now it has to face an underrated Georgia State offense and rely on its offense to keep up? No, thank you.

Georgia State Panthers Betting Preview: Running Up the Board

I have been impressed with what Dell McGee has built offensively. Georgia State is 3-1 and averaging 38.8 points and 468.3 yards per game, leading the Sun Belt in total offense.

QB Cameran Brown has thrown for 873 yards, while RB Lanear McCrary Jr. has 338 yards on the ground, and that balance has made the Panthers extremely difficult to get off-kilter.

Georgia State owns a 49.1% Success Rate on standard downs compared to just 29.9% for ODU. That’s an enormous gap that can’t be emphasized enough.

The offensive line has also kept Brown clean, allowing Havoc on only 10.5% of its snaps, while Georgia State’s defense generates Havoc at a 17.8% clip. That’s exactly the type of hidden mismatch I want when laying less than a field goal.

The Panthers also just beat NIU, 35-14, despite getting outgained 432-342 because they dominated the high-leverage portions of the game, recording six sacks and pitching a second-half shutout.

This seems like a bit of a fishy line, but I don’t care. I think the Panthers roll here at home.

Old Dominion vs Georgia State Pick, Betting Analysis

This is one of my favorite trenches mismatches on the board. ODU allows a 24.3% Havoc Rate and gets stuffed on 31.5% of its rushing attempts.

Georgia State allows just 10.5% Havoc and gets stuffed on only 17.6%. It is going to win the battle of the trenches, and that could be enough to make this ugly early.

The Panthers should consistently stay ahead of the chains while ODU is forced into obvious passing downs, where Henicle and this offensive line have struggled to protect the football.

Georgia State also has the better Finishing Drives profile, the better offensive Success Rate, and significantly more balance.

McCrary gives the Panthers a legitimate early-down rushing threat, while Brown has been just as impressive.
ODU, meanwhile, is 0-4 ATS and just got mauled at home by JMU.

The market has been all over the place here, with Georgia State available as high as -2.5 before some shops flipped toward ODU. This seems like bizarre market activity, but I’m not going to fall for it.

If you have Georgia State -2.5, I’d keep it and wouldn’t overthink it.

Pick: Georgia State -2.5
