Stanford vs Wake Forest College Football Preview
Stanford Cardinal Betting Preview: Really Tough Stretch
Talk about a brutal stretch of schedule — Stanford plays three road games in four weeks (all three to the Eastern Time Zone!), including against a quality Duke team, a physical Wake Forest team, and national contender Notre Dame.
Though the offensive line returned some much-needed contributors from injury, center Aidan Kilstrom remains out, and the defense took an enormous hit with the loss of CB Brandon Nicholson, likely for the rest of the season. Nicholson, an NFL-caliber player, sealed the Georgia Tech win with an interception, but landed awkwardly on his leg.
With four data points to work with, Stanford has two gritty wins against Hawaii and Georgia Tech where QB Davis Warren looked pretty good. It also has two data points where it was run out of the stadium by Miami and Duke.
Opportunities to notch wins are scant the rest of the way, with homecoming against Elon being the only obvious victory spot left. (If it tells you anything about the lack of trust in this program, setting homecoming against Elon is a statement.)
To find the Cardinal's last road win, you have to go back to 2024, when Stanford beat an eventual 10-win Syracuse in September in what can only be graded as an inexplicable result. That stands as their lone road win as an ACC member (1-12).
It turns out, Tavita Pritchard is not re-establishing Stanford as the power run-first offense he had sworn in the offseason. Instead, Pritchard is running with pace (24.3 seconds per play, 25th-fastest in the FBS!) and attempting a pass on more than 56% of plays (18th most). It's understandable given the health of his offensive line and time spent trailing.
In a more neutral game script (leading Georgia Tech late), Pritchard went run. The throw game has been far more successful than the ground game this year.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons Betting Preview: Fun at the Expense of Defense
Aside from a season-opener against overmatched Akron, Wake Forest has turned in two types of games: (1) winning by the skin of their teeth and (2) making things more interesting late than they oughtta be — sometimes both.
Without a miraculous late call against Purdue, Wake Forest heads to Louisville with more losses than wins. If not for a late-game push against Miami, Wake enters that game with more losses than wins and a beatdown at the hands of the Hurricanes.
Finally, the Demon Deacons staved off a late push from Louisville to move to 3-1. Exciting, but not sure it's sustainable.
Opposing offenses have been able to do essentially whatever they want against this Wake defense, especially through the air. Of its three Power Conference foes, two have gone for over 300 yards through the air — the exception here, ironically, is Darian Mensah, who completed 30-of-34 passes for three touchdowns — and Wake has struggled to cover opposing No. 1 receivers. Fortunately, that cast gets a lot lighter in the coming weeks.
Wake still relies on a bend-don't-break model. Its Success Rate allowed (51.9%) is 120th in the country, but Wake sits 56th in points per drive allowed. The issue is that they're not keeping teams off the scoreboard enough and have benefited greatly from opposing turnovers.
As Miami demonstrated, efficient offenses shred this unit to pieces. (That is, until Shannon Dawson stopped calling efficient plays, leading to a horrendous fourth quarter by Miami.)
Wake Forest classifies as fun this year. We can expect plenty more one-score finishes and wild endings thanks to a defense that isn't overly talented and not nearly as effective as last year, plus an offense carried by star receiver Carlos Hernandez.

Stanford vs Wake Forest Pick, Betting Analysis
The threat for Week 5 is widespread tropical downpours across most of the eastern half of the United States.
The remnants of Hurricane Polo are forecast to bring inches of rain per hour to a lot of the Plains, Midwest, and Southeast throughout the weekend. But Winston-Salem sits far enough east that the biggest threat for rain doesn't come until Saturday evening into Sunday. Thankfully for Wake, this game kicks off at noon Eastern.
Unfortunately for Stanford, this game kicks off at noon Eastern.
I love a good body clock game — for Stanford, this is a 9:00 a.m. internal kickoff as far away from home as this team can get (almost).
We have a terrific combination here:
- Two poor passing defenses, one of which lost its best player last week (Stanford)
- Two pass-heavy, up-tempo offenses
- An early kickoff and body clock game
Expect this game to be among the latest noon kickoffs to continue as the clock crawls with incomplete passes and scores.
Early in the week, this line was bet up heavily, from 51.5 all the way to 55, where it met resistance. It continued to slide down but has stalled midweek, perhaps to keep an eye on Saturday's weather conditions.
Given forecast trends, this game looks to stay dry.
Pick: Over 53.5 Points (-115, FanDuel | Play to 54.5)
