Syracuse vs UConn College Football Preview
Syracuse Orange Betting Preview
Syracuse has been much better than its 1-2 record suggests, and the Orange have had 16 days to sit around and stew over the missed opportunities left out on the field against Cal and Pitt.
The Orange outgained Cal by 188 yards at home and held a double-digit lead before gift-wrapping and bow-tying two touchdown drives for the Golden Bears in the second half.
Against Pitt, the yardage was even; Syracuse out-possessed the Panthers and had more first downs, but three drives stalled out inside the Panthers' 40-yard line.
This team has played about as bad situationally as humanly possible, but with the bye week, I think Syracuse will be able to refocus and get back on track.
Head coach Fran Brown has displayed confidence in quarterback Steve Angeli despite the recent turnover struggles.
Angeli is a capable quarterback who was fully dialed in before a bad injury ended his season last year after just four games, and I believe the time off will help him dial back in for the remainder of this season.
Ahmad Miller ran the ball effectively against Pitt, and Shavane Anderson Jr. has also been solid. Leading rusher Tylik Hill may also return this week after being injured against California.
I expect the ground attack to be proficient enough to keep the UConn defense honest, which will open up the pass game for the Cuse.
The Syracuse defense was atrocious last season, but the stop unit has played really good football this season.
The Orange have allowed just 258 yards per game. The Havoc numbers have increased significantly, giving Syracuse a chance to get off the field and register stops.
The secondary has also been very strong against the pass, and while this week will be a test, I like the Cuse defense in the matchup to create some problems against the UConn offense.
UConn Huskies Betting Preview
UConn has been through a decent amount of transition, as Jason Candle took over after Jim Mora’s successful stint. Most of the personnel is new this season.
The Huskies have split their four games this season with victories over FCS Lafayette and struggling Southern Miss, while dropping games against Maryland and Miami (OH).
Bowl hopes are in play, but the schedule now looks a lot tougher, as some of the teams remaining on the schedule have exceeded expectations. This is a critical game for the Huskies.
The offense has feasted on three terrible defenses in Lafayette, Southern Miss and Miami (OH).
The pass game has been effective, with quarterback Kalieb Osborne completing 61% of his passes for 850 yards and seven touchdowns while also doubling as the team’s leading rusher.
Osborne’s scrambling ability and mobility on called runs have helped this offense extend drives and stay on the field this season, but his elusiveness will be tested here.
Cyncir Bowers, Kenji Christian and Trey Cornist have split the running back duties effectively for the balanced Huskies, who want to run the ball and will seek to establish the run here.
Syracuse has been strong against the run this season, so this is going to be quite the task for UConn this week.
Pass explosives have also been key, and UConn has torched poor secondaries this season with its passing game. I'm just not sure we see that play out against the Syracuse pass defense on Saturday afternoon.
UConn has allowed over 400 yards per game and six yards per play defensively this season against FBS-level competition. Both Southern Miss and Miami (OH) hit on explosive plays against UConn, and both offenses left a lot of points on the field.
Syracuse has felt similar pain in both of its losses this season, but I expect Cuse to cash in when the opportunity presents itself.

Syracuse vs UConn Pick, Betting Analysis
This line opened with Syracuse listed as 6-point favorites with the total set at 50.5. Syracuse is currently priced at -6.5, with some -7s showing in the market. I like the Orange to win this game and cover the number.
Syracuse has not played since Sept. 17, and the team isn't happy about how the last couple of performances have gone. I believe this team is better than its record, while also not being convinced that UConn is any good.
Connecticut has taken the field twice since the Orange last played, and the rest advantage will give these players a much-needed refresh.
Syracuse will connect on downfield explosives through the air. The Orange rank 32nd nationally in passing explosiveness, and Justus Ross-Simmons and Umari Hatcher have an advantage when lining up against the UConn secondary.
I look for Angeli to have time to let downfield plays develop and for his passing to look sharp on Saturday.
UConn isn't a strong Havoc defense, and the Huskies haven't registered more than one sack against an FBS opponent all season.
The secondary is not strong enough to hold up in pass coverage, so Syracuse should have its way with this defense. Cuse's run game should look good against UConn’s defensive front, so I expect the Orange to score a lot of points on Saturday.
The Syracuse defense doesn't get talked about enough for its improvement on this side of the ball, but I believe this bunch will have advantages against the UConn offense.
This is the best defense Connecticut will have played all season after beating up on some bad ones, but the pressure will force Osborne to make decisions quicker than expected, which will throw off the timing of the entire offense.
Syracuse is the better team here. Last year when these two teams met, the Orange controlled much of the game before a ferocious fourth-quarter comeback where UConn forced overtime.
Syracuse ended up winning, but the way that game ended did not sit well with Brown.
Brown lined his team up on the 20-yard line after the game in full pads in front of everyone and had his group running gassers after the win.
Everyone in the program remembers that, so there's extra motivation for Syracuse to save its season and pick up a big win on the road.
Pick: Syracuse -6.5 (-120)
