UAB vs Memphis College Football Preview

UAB Blazers Betting Preview
While far from a great football team, in five games, UAB is one win away from matching Trent Dilfer's all-time high number of wins in a season.
Alex Mortensen was a solid retention by the school after it botched the last hiring process.
And despite his abrasive past, it's hard to ignore the immediate impact Todd Grantham has on the defense. Dilfer's old DC was a high school coaching buddy who had never called plays at the collegiate level.
In just one offseason, Grantham raised the bar from the worst defense in the FBS to 81st overall in points per drive.
Mortensen reformed the secondary with transfers, namely a couple of players who came with Grantham from Oklahoma State.
As a result, UAB's pass defense has been strong, so long as the playing field is level. IllinoisQB Katin Houser was efficient against the unit, but only threw for 182 yards (13 completions).
Defending the run is a different story, as UAB has really struggled to contain explosive rushes. Red zone defense is a significant issue, too, as UAB has allowed a score on every single opposing trip inside the 20.
Turnovers and penalties have disrupted an otherwise on-schedule offense. As a result, just 22.9% of UAB's offensive possessions have ended up in the end zone (109th).
QB Ryder Burton exited last week's game with a right shoulder injury. Left tackle Payton Kirkland returned to the lineup last week, playing the second half against Samford, after missing three weeks.
His and other linemen's injuries have resulted in an alarming number of sacks (13, 17th-most in the country). But having Kirkland gives that unit a major boost.

Memphis Tigers Betting Preview
Despite losing Ryan Silverfield to Arkansas, Memphis had a massive upgrade in coaching.
Now that Charles Huff is in town, Memphis is asserting itself as the top dog in the American — it has more talent and more resources than anybody else in the league, and now that Silverfield isn't throwing that advantage away, Memphis is back on track.
Last week's 59-8 win over Charlotte was more a statement on the hapless 49ers, but it did reinforce that Memphis isn't a team to play with its food anymore (see: last year's 31-24 outright loss to UAB as a -21.5 favorite).
Huff is an elite coach and, despite his history of friction with his athletic directors, he's a proven winner.
QB Marcus Stokes has been excellent, leading the country in yards per attempt (11.1) and showing an ability to extend the play with his legs.
Memphis has always fielded a potent offense, but one that's thrived on volume. This year's team is exceptionally efficient, ranking No. 1 in yards per play (8.29) 20th in adjusted EPA per play and 27th in success rate.
Stokes has spread the ball around — five different receivers already have 100+ yards — and Jaylin Carter has been an explosive addition to the backfield.
This is the American's premier offense.
Lance Guidry was a great hire, and he's working with a ferocious pass rush. The duo of J'Mond Tapp and Elijah Kinsler are as good as you'll find in the Group of Six, and the unit has logged a sack on nearly 9% of opposing dropbacks (24th).
However, Memphis does have a leaky secondary that's given up 16 20+ yard passes to opponents. When Tapp and Kinsler aren't getting home, Memphis' secondary gets into trouble pretty quickly.

UAB vs Memphis Pick, Betting Analysis
Keep your eye on this one. Remnants of Hurricane Isaias are expected to impact Memphis throughout the day Saturday, bringing rain and wind to the area. However, the rain is expected to die down, as is the wind, throughout the game.
But as a result, an opening total of 58.5 was bet all the way down to 52.5 points.
Perhaps that's gone too far.
The latest on Isaias is that it's moving faster than expected. That should continue to push the poor window for weather up earlier in the day leading up to Saturday. Of course, driving rain and stiff wind isn't a recipe for lots of points.
Memphis should overwhelm UAB along both lines of scrimmage. Although improved, UAB has benefitted from playing a cast of ho-hum offenses in ULM (83rd in points per drive), Louisiana (71st) and Navy (100th).
This is truly the first premier offense the Blazers have faced this year. When out-manned against Illinois, UAB surrendered 46 points, and that game wasn't overly excellent for the Illini.
I expect plenty of points and Memphis hasn't shown to be a lockdown defense against FBS foes with a pulse (so, not Charlotte).
This line moved too far in reaction to the impending hurricane remnants. You can see 10 sharp moves to the under on Action Network PRO, but those are at numbers long, long gone.
I'm playing back over as conditions look to improve after kickoff.
Pick: Over 52.5 (Play to 54.5)
