Producer Amy Pascal, discussing the franchise in a new interview tied to the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, confirmed that expecting an announcement by "the end of the year" is a strong likelihood. She described the search as careful and deliberate, adding that whoever takes the role needs to feel like a real break from Daniel Craig rather than a repeat of what came before.
It's the first real signal since Amazon MGM installed Pascal and David Heyman as producers, hired Denis Villeneuve to direct, and brought in Peaky Blinders writer Steven Knight for the script. Reports point to a final round of auditions beginning this month, narrowing a shortlist several outlets place at around five to seven names.

Debbie McWilliams, who cast Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig over four decades on the series, has pushed back on several of the names currently leading the conversation, arguing the role depends on the audience knowing almost nothing about the actor going in: "It is absolutely essential that Bond retains a total enigma."
She's also pointed out that neither Dalton nor Brosnan was especially well-known when they got the part: a reminder that market favorites and eventual winners haven't always matched up in Bond's history.
What Could Move The Numbers Next
August auditions are the most obvious trigger for movement: any leak or confirmed callback tends to shift a market fast. There's also a scheduling angle worth watching: Villeneuve is still finishing Dune: Part Three, due out December 18, and by most accounts his full attention doesn't turn to Bond until that film wraps… a timeline that lines up closely with what Pascal just described.
None of that guarantees a name by New Year's. But for a search that's stayed quiet for five years, having an actual window to watch is new. The tuxedo is still empty. For the first time in a while, there's a date circled for when that might change.
