Chiefs vs Colts Preview
The Chiefs and Colts looked like they were playing two different sports in Week 1.
The Colts opened their season at home against the Ravens and were demolished by halftime. The Colts offense was static for both halves, with the only productive day coming from star RB Jonathan Taylor, who produced 121 yards and 2 TDs on 22 touches.
Despite a double-digit second-half deficit, the Colts fed Taylor all game. Typically, a game script like this would demand more passing, but with QB Daniel Jones playing for the first time since suffering an Achilles surgery, Indianapolis took a cautious approach.
Jones threw the ball 31 times and attempted just one rush. If the Colts fall behind early tonight, he may have more responsibilities than in Week 1.
Jones has a league-average 2.1% career interception rate, but this jumps to 2.8% in losses and a gaudy 3.7% in late games. He is a good bet to throw an interception in Arrowhead Stadium, especially after the 6-point favorite Chiefs take an expected lead.
Meanwhile, Jones will be forced to rely on his sure-handed weapon in TE Tyler Warren.
Warren had a fantastic rookie year, with 76 catches, 817 receiving yards, and four TDs on 112 targets. Unfortunately, he only saw five targets in Week 1 and caught just three.
Nevertheless, Warren and Jones had a special connection in 2025 — all four of Warren's touchdowns were from Jones. Also, Warren went over 4.5 receptions with Jones in five of six games the Colts either lost or only won by one score last season.
On the opposing end, the Chiefs looked like they entered a second prime in Week 1. They dominated their division rival, the Broncos, on all fronts.
This 31-10 victory felt like a new era for the Chiefs, with a running game they have not had since the early days of Kareem Hunt. The addition of Kenneth Walker in free agency filled a massive need for this team, balancing their offense for the first time in years.
However, they also made another significant backfield addition. Rookie fifth-round pick Emmett Johnson displayed a knack for making defenders miss tackles and creating yards after contact. He earned 68 yards on 11 touches, with 44 coming as a receiver.
Johnson's rushing yards line today is a breakable 15.5. While Johnson only had three yards per carry on eight rushes last week, he may have better luck against a Colts defense several tiers behind the Broncos.
Indianapolis just allowed 202 yards and four TDs on 37 carries to the Ravens, with 18 yards coming from receiving back Justice Hill on six carries.
The Chiefs should win this game and continue to limit superstar QB Patrick Mahomes' dropbacks, even with his impressive rushing production last week.
Kansas City passed the ball 27 times and attempted 38 rushes. This split may be closer in Week 2 with a less ferocious pass rush, but expect Johnson to continue working in with Walker after playing 36.2% of the snaps in his first NFL game.
