Commanders vs 49ers Spread Prediction
The Commanders rank 19th in offensive yards per play and defensive yards per play while the 49ers boast a top-five unit using the same metrics.
San Francisco has the most efficient offense in the NFL through five weeks.
Brock Purdy has been the top rated passer in the NFL in a clean pocket at 133.6. Purdy operates from a comfortable pocket often due to the offensive system under head coach Kyle Shanahan, combined with an offensive line that has protected well (league-low 2% sack rate).
Washington’s defense under head coach Dan Quinn has been shredded when it fails to get pressure. Part of the reason for this boils down to the Commanders’ secondary and the lack of a playmaker that can stay with the top option from the opposing offense.
Ceedee Lamb, Malik Nabers, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba all exceeded 120 yards through the air against Washington. Mike Evans may not be on that level this late in his career, but he is coming off of his best game as a 49er and is a trusted target of Purdy's when the chains need to be moved on third down.
Lastly, the 49ers defense has played against one other mobile quarterback this season in Malik Willis, limiting him to just six rushing yards.
In addition to staying disciplined in their pass rushing lanes, the 49ers rarely allows explosive plays, ranking as the best team in the league in limiting chunk gains. This means the Commanders will have to sustain drives and convert on third down consistently. They have yet to display an ability to do so this season, ranking 29th by converting just 31% of the time on third down.
Lay the points with the home favorite here up to -8.
Pick: 49ers -7.5 (-105)
Commanders vs 49ers Over/Under Pick
By Billy Ward
Unless this game plays much closer than the 7.5 point spread would indicate, I have a very hard time seeing how this one turns into a shootout.
A lot of that comes down to the pace. Both teams rank in the bottom-seven in overall pace of play, with the 49ers – who likely control the ball more of the game – the second slowest.
Crucially, the 49ers are also the second-slowest team when leading by at least seven, which is likely to be the condition for a good chunk of the game.
The 49ers' top-five defense will make mounting a comeback hard for the Commanders, and I’m not especially convinced that their 27-point showing against the Giants means anything against stronger defenses.
Plus, we’ve got some variance in the lines throughout the market, with DraftKings setting the line at an aggressive 52.5. The under is -115, but I’m fine paying the extra juice to get the bigger number on the total.
This is also a good spot to try a “first half over, full game under” anti-correlated SGP, which should work out if the 49ers take over early, and/or a bet on the highest scoring half to be the first, which is +100 via DraftKings.
Pick: Under 52.5 (-115)
George Kittle Anytime Touchdown Scorer
By Sam Farley
49ers tight end George Kittle is tied with Mike Evans for the most red-zone targets on the team (6). That matters because the Commanders have been absolutely terrible against opposing tight ends, allowing seven touchdowns already this season.
Dig deeper into those numbers, and one in every five receptions by an opposing tight end has resulted in a touchdown against Washington.
Kittle is still one of the better TEs in the league, probably on that rung below Brock Bowers and Trey McBride, but he’s registered four touchdowns already this season and needs to be backed here.
The odds are already a little skinny, and I wouldn’t advise taking this at even money or worse.
Pick: George Kittle Anytime Touchdown (+110)
Antonio Williams Anytime Touchdown
By Sean Koerner
Stefon Diggs is officially questionable for this game after not practicing on Wednesday but logging limited practices on Thursday and Friday. His uncertainty for this game leads me to rookie wide receiver Antonio Williams.
While his stats from last week don't jump off the page (three receptions for 31 yards), Williams had a 77% routes run rate against the Giants.
Williams' style of play is reminiscent of Amon-Ra St. Brown — the Clemson product is a favorite of offensive coordinator David Blough, who wanted the Commanders to draft him.
I want to keep investing in Williams before he breaks out and this is a great spot to do so considering the Commanders could be in a trailing game script as 7.5-point underdogs.
Pick: Antonio Williams Anytime Touchdown (+475; DraftKings) | 16¢ on Polymarket
