Cowboys vs Eagles NFL Monday Night Football Preview

Dak Prescott and the Cowboys offense have failed to live up to the extremely high expectations placed on them heading into the 2026 season.

The Cowboys have scored more than 20 points in just three of their six games. Prescott’s numbers have hardly been impressive — he ranks just 19th in yards per pass attempt. The veteran quarterback has struggled against blitz-heavy schemes in recent weeks, averaging just 3.8 yards per attempt in Dallas' last two losses when Tampa Bay and Green Bay sent additional rushers.

Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio does not typically use blitzes in obvious passing situations, but I expect him to make an adjustment in this spot for a couple of reasons.

Fangio should see the success of previous defenses and try to replicate it. Additionally, his defense should have ample opportunities to force the Cowboys to convert on third downs through the air, given the Dallas rushing attack is rather inefficient.

The Cowboys' leading rusher, Javonte Williams, is averaging just 3.7 yards per rush this season. Williams does not generate explosive rushes at a high rate — he has forced just 10 missed tackles on 85 carries this season.

The lack of production on the ground forces Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer to continue placing the offense’s success squarely on his quarterback's shoulders.

Prescott has missed throws that should be completions and has put some concerning moments on tape. I won’t go as far as to say his skills may be starting to decline, but it is more than fair to shift expectations on what this offense can deliver moving forward.

With all of that said, the handicap of this game begins and ends with the putrid Eagles offense. Tempering expectations for Dallas means projecting 24-20 points scored. Those are marks Philly is unlikely to reach.

Without creating turnovers or giving an offense that lacks playmakers a short field, all the surface-level and advanced data point to an offense that simply cannot sustain drives.

Tanner McKee started at quarterback a week ago, and the game flow dictated that he throw the ball at a higher rate than the Eagles would like. McKee attempted 45 passes and averaged just 4.8 yards per pass, with 14 of his targets sent to DeVonta Smith. Smith has been ruled out for Monday Night Football, as has No. 2 WR Dontayvion Wicks.

The Eagles have generated just nine passing plays of 20 or more yards and nine rushing plays of 10 or more yards. Both rank last in the NFL.

Without Smith and Wicks, they face an even more difficult task here in moving the chains. Saquon Barkley could potentially return to the lineup, but that won’t change the need for McKee to make plays on third down consistently if the Eagles are going to move the ball.

Philadelphia faces a third down on more than 60% of its new set of downs, which ranks 31st in the NFL. The Eagles face 3rd-and-7 or longer at the highest rate.

Without any explosive element and their tendency to face 3rd-and-long situations, even a defense the caliber of Dallas' will be in a great position to get off the field at some point in the 8-12 play drives needed for the Eagles to put points on the scoreboard.

Diving further into the matchup for Sean Mannion’s offense shows even more concerning data when examined closely.

Through six games, Mannion’s passing attack has struggled against Cover 3 and against the blitz. The Eagles are averaging a significant negative output in expected points added (EPA) when operating versus each at -0.31 and -0.29 per dropback, respectively. The Cowboys defense under Christian Parker plays Cover 3 and sends extra blitzers at a higher rate than league average.

Cowboys vs Eagles Prediction, Betting Analysis

The Eagles have averaged 14.5 points per game over their last four contests. Their coaching staff knows with certainty that if they are going to pull off the upset here, it will be in the 20-17 or 17-14 variety.

I do not completely rule out such an outcome, given what I’ve seen from Dak Prescott in recent games, and the fact that the Cowboys have covered the number in just three of their last 14 games as a favorite dating back to the start of 2025.

The Eagles have to lean on the running game if they are to stay in this game. Don’t expect much success on the ground for a team that ranks 28th in total rushing yards this season, but they simply cannot task McKee with throwing the ball 45 times again without DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks on the outside.

This total has dropped down to 43.5 at some books, but shop around diligently for under 44 at -115 or better.

Pick: Under 44.5 (-120, FanDuel)
