Giants vs Cowboys Preview
The Cowboys and Giants set up our first Sunday Night Football of the season in the Meadowlands.
The Giants' offseason has been full of change, primarily in the coaching department. John Harbaugh, Matt Nagy, and Greg Roman team up to bring the G-Men back to relevance, with a team largely constructed by Joe Schoen and the previous coaching staff.
However, there are several new faces on the 2026 Giants.
Isaiah Likely, Tremaine Edmunds, and DJ Reader comprise the primary veteran additions, while Arvell Reese, Francis Mauigoa, and Malachi Fields seek to make an impact as rookies in immediate starting roles.
The biggest addition for the Giants is the return of superstar WR Malik Nabers from a torn ACL, but the loss of key DT Dexter Lawrence may counteract Nabers' return.
There are question marks on this roster, but they are bolstered by budding talent like Adbul Carter, Jaxson Dart, Cam Skattebo, along with proven veterans Andrew Thomas and Brian Burns.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys are returning most of their 2025 roster, with several key additions and few impactful losses. They added arguably this past draft's top DB in Caleb Downs, and another first-round pick to their DL in Malachi Lawrence. This bolsters a defense that jumped from among the worst to league average following the midseason addition of Quinnen Williams in 2025.
The offense is almost untouched from last season, but Dallas will be missing star OL Tyler Smith for the first 4-6 weeks. This is an impactful loss against one of the most talented defensive lines in football, but it may not change the outcome of this game.
Otherwise, the Cowboys are loaded with a healthy Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, and Javonte Williams.
Williams is likely the biggest beneficiary of today's 3-point spread for Dallas. He is a workhorse and will be relied upon to keep the Giants' EDGE away from Prescott in his matchup against last year's 32nd-ranked defense against rushing (via FTN) that just lost the aforementioned Lawrence. Williams averaged 75.1 rushing yards per game last season, but he was at 84.6 through the first seven games of the season.
On the rushing front, Dart is likely to use his legs a lot today. The Giants want Dart to keep himself out of the blue medical tent and protect himself, but he is stubborn and a natural rusher since college.
Dart averaged seven rushing attempts per game last season. However, he averaged 8.2 in starts before his Week 10 concussion against the Bears. With Nabers potentially out or limited tonight, expect Dart to have to carry a higher load of work.
Lastly, with Nabers a game-time decision and the Giants' investment in Likely this offseason, there will be a healthy dose of TE targets due to the Giants' limited WR depth.
Fields is intriguing, yet he never commanded a heavy target share in college. Furthermore, Odell Beckham Jr. is past his prime, while Darnell Mooney is unreliable.
Assuming the Cowboys take an early lead, Likely will see a career high in target share this season, with his freedom from the shackles of TE1 Mark Andrews in Baltimore.
Likely's career-high 29.8 receiving yards per game in 2024 (59.9% snaps) will not compare to what he is capable of in 2026, with a higher-passing-volume offense and full TE snap share.
