Jaguars vs Dolphins NFL Preseason Preview
There's going to be no Trevor Lawrence on Saturday for the Jaguars on Saturday night — or any first-stringers for that matter.
"We are not going to play our starters," said head coach Liam Coen (per SI). "We got them the two weeks of work in the first two games."
That means we also won't see rookie Travis Hunter on either side of the ball despite the team having six injuries in the DB room. With the regular season around the corner, it's no surprise but it leaves Jacksonville without real star power on the field, hence the Dolphins moving from 2.5-point underdogs to 6.5-point favorites.
The Jaguars have failed to get a win in the preseason so far and have only managed two passing touchdowns, of which Lawrence and Nick Mullens have one each.
Today, we'll see Mullens get the start, followed by reps for John Wolford and Seth Henigan. Neither are exceptional backups and the Jaguars' offense might struggle here.
For the Dolphins, we're going to see Tua Tagovailoa, with head coach Mike McDaniel confirming on Thursday that "my plan is for them to appear" when talking about the starters.
However, he's yet to really detail just how much we'll get to see his first-string players.
Given that Miami has a number of injuries, we will quite likely see De'Von Achane sit, with Tyreek Hill potentially joining him on the sidelines.
When Tagovailoa is removed from play, which surely won't be long into the game, we're going to see Zach Wilson and Quinn Ewers get their shot.
Wilson has had moments in preseason, throwing 247 and a touchdown whilst avoiding turnovers. Ewers, too, has been up and down, throwing two touchdown passes against the Lions, but only completing 5-of-18 passes against the Bears the week before.
Jaguars vs Dolphins Prediction, Betting Analysis
There's a real temptation to back the Dolphins to cover, but the line has moved a long way and 6.5 points is substantial when you have two quarterbacks as inconsistent as Wilson and Ewers.
Instead, it feels smarter to take on the total for the game. I'm taking the under due to the lack of quality we'll see at quarterback.
Pick: Under 38.5 (-113)
Spread
I don't like any team to cover the spread as the line has moved a long way in the last few days.
Moneyline
I'm staying away from moneyline.
Over/Under
As mentioned, I see value in the under for today's game.
