NHL daily picks: The Sabres have some teeth in Dallas

It's a busy night in the National Hockey League with 13 games, so let's jump right into the action.

Last night's action: Nothing doing last night, so we look back to Thursday night. It's important to keep the blinders on in sports betting, but if you were on Carolina against Colorado on Thursday night, that credo was tested. The Hurricanes put up 60 shots on goal against the Avalanche and still lost 5-3. It's a bad beat and it sucks, but you just hope that you're on the right side as much as you are on the unfortunate side. We were left scratching our heads with the Isles as well, as they outplayed the Capitals for the entire game before losing on a weak goal late in the game. Goalies, man. We did salvage the night thanks to the Jets who took care of the Stars.

After they did us raw in their win over the Hurricanes, the Avalanche head East for a two-game road trip starting against with tonight's tilt with Philadelphia. The Flyers may be without Shayne Gostisbehere again tonight. Their ace defenseman took the morning skate but still is a game-time decision. Even if he dresses, the Flyers are playing their third game in four nights, so it's not an ideal spot for Philly. Grab the Avs.

Thus far, Washington is a bit of a mess at 5-on-5, and their underlying numbers don't suggest their sluggish start is a mirage. In fact, they boast an inflated PDO. The Caps will also continue to be without Andre Burakovsky and Matt Niskanen. On the other end of the ice, Brad Marchand is confirmed to be in for Boston. You're getting a discount on Boston here.

We've got a funny matchup between Montreal and Winnipeg. The Jets are the third-worst team in the NHL when it comes to Corsi For % and the Canadiens are the third-best in the same category. And weirdly, the Jets are getting good goaltending while the Habs have been let down by their netminders. Things don't get easier for Montreal as Carey Price is out with a concussion, so they'll be going with Al Montoya tonight against the piping hot Connor Hellebuyck. The Jets are in range for another bet.

The Buffalo Sabres won't strike fear into many teams, and a trip to Dallas against the Stars isn't an easy matchup for any team, but the number is a little off here, especially with Dallas starting Kari Lehtonen in goal. You'll lose more often than you win, but you could do a lot worse than a bet on the Sabres at this number.

Chicago is a polarizing team. The Blackhawks lack depth, but their top players are among the best in the league, and they have one of the league's best goaltenders in Corey Crawford. Their game with the Wild on Saturday night is pretty much a coin flip, so take what you're being given here with Chicago.

Nashville is the second night of a back-to-back against Los Angeles, and even though it's a "schedule loss," the Preds are the value side of this game. I made this Kings -135, so it's a big edge the other way with the Preds.

Plays: Avalanche +147, Bruins -113, Jets -123, Sabres +156, Blackhawks +114, Predators +145
