When Alabama hired Nick Saban in January 2007, the rest of the SEC was put on notice: Get us while you can. Mississippi State did. The Bulldogs' first meeting with Saban ended in a 17-12 home victory for MSU, awash in clanging cowbells. From there, things got ugly for MSU, as they did for the rest of the conference. Saban won 16 straight against the Bulldogs by an average score of 33 to 8. This became nothing more than a tune-up game for the Tide in the SEC West. Two significant things have changed since these two programs last met in 2023: Nick Saban retired, and Kamario Taylor signed with Miss State, spurning a late offer from Georgia. Alabama is no longer the immovable defensive force they were under Saban, and MSU has a CFP-worthy offense for the first time since 2014. Kamario Taylor is the highest-rated quarterback to ever sign with Mississippi State. And it takes all of two snaps to see why. He has an electric arm, allowing him to fire the ball anywhere on the field with the simple flick of his wrist. And he has the size and athleticism to run through or around most defenders. He ranks ninth nationally in QBR, and his “moon ball” touch is becoming the stuff of legend. Among qualifying quarterbacks with at least 16 deep pass attempts (20+ Air Yards), Taylor is the only passer with seven or more passing touchdowns and zero interceptions. Head coach Jeff Lebby has created a perfect system for Taylor to flourish within, and that was on full display on Saturday night in Starkville. After blowing a 14-0 lead, Lebby put the ball in Taylor’s hands late, and the sophomore delivered with a perfectly placed game-winning touchdown pass between two Mizzou defenders. Speaking of that blown lead, while the Taylor storyline is genuinely inspiring, this MSU defense is not. Austin Simmons carved up the Bulldog defense for 295 yards and three scores through the air. Despite playing UL Monroe and Minnesota in its non-conference slate, Mississippi State is 114th in pass defense, and 130th in pass rush. That last stat is a major problem with Alabama coming to town. If you choose to blitz Keelon Russell, you’re playing with fire. Alabama’s super athletic quarterback burned Florida State for a 57-yard rushing touchdown when the Seminoles dared to blitz him two weeks ago. And if you allow him to set up shop in a clean pocket, he completes nearly 75% of his attempts with the 11th-highest passer rating in the sport per PFF. Perhaps it’s Alabama fatigue, a desire by the college football world to see them struggle, or Russell’s small sample size, but markets haven’t caught up to the fact that this Alabama offense is elite. The Tide are averaging 48 points per game (4th), regularly hitting explosive plays of 30+ yards (13th), and finishing off drives at an elite level. They have entered their opponent’s red zone 19 times this season; they’ve scored on every trip, with a touchdown percentage of 79% (16th). If Alabama can set the pace, MSU will have no choice but to rev up their NASCAR tempo. Lebby already has his Bulldogs snapping the ball every 23 seconds (6th), so they’ll be prepared to play catch-up if Alabama hits the ground running early in this game. Alabama has looked vulnerable on the back end, evidenced by Florida State’s 377 passing yards and 36 points. Under the hood, it's even worse in one specific category: tackling. Alabama is 93rd in that department, and the combination of Taylor, Fluff Bothwell, and Anthony Evans III poses major problems in the tackle-breaking department. All three players are elite when it comes to making the first man miss. Bothwell and Evans III are both top 15 in forced missed tackles at their respective positions, and Taylor has flashed his escapability (6 missed tackles) when he’s needed to. Both teams have 40-point upside in this one. A total under 60 is too good to pass up.

Mississippi State Bulldogs Odds & Betting Guide — 2026 Season

Mississippi State started 4-0 last season, beat a ranked Arizona State team, and then went 1-7 in the SEC. This year the schedule includes six preseason top-25 opponents.

Where Mississippi State stands

Jeff Lebby enters year three at 7-18. His debut produced 2-10 with an 0-8 conference record. Year two doubled the win total to 5-8, though the shape of it was jarring.

The Bulldogs opened 4-0, their first such start since 2014, including an upset of then-No. 12 Arizona State. They also snapped a 16-game SEC losing streak dating to 2023 with a win over Arkansas on Nov. 1, Lebby's first conference victory. Then they finished 1-7 in league play and lost the Duke's Mayo Bowl 43-29 to Wake Forest.

Across three seasons Mississippi State has won two conference games total.

The defining offseason move was handing the defense back to Zach Arnett, who ran the coordinator's chair in Starkville from 2020 through 2022 and produced three consecutive top-five SEC defenses before a brief and unsuccessful run as head coach. He replaces Coleman Hutzler.

Kamario Taylor is the reason for optimism. The highest-rated quarterback recruit in program history appeared in 11 games as a true freshman with two starts, throwing for five touchdowns and running for eight, earning a pair of SEC Freshman of the Week honors and seizing the job by the regular-season finale. At 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds, he fits Lebby's veer and shoot system, which blends quarterback runs with tempo passing.

Running back Fluff Bothwell returns after leading the team with 142 carries and 677 yards despite injury. Anthony Evans III is back as the leading receiver, joined by Missouri transfer Marquis Johnson.

The offensive line is the swing unit and the clearest weakness. Center Canon Boone is the only returning starter, with transfers Miles McVay, DJ Chester from LSU and LJ Prudhomme from Arkansas filling the rest.

The SEC moved to nine conference games

The conference expanded to a nine-game league schedule for 2026, replacing a likely non-conference win with another SEC game for all 16 programs. For a team that has won two conference games in three years, that swap is punishing.

The resulting slate is the hardest in the country by ranked opponents. Mississippi State faces No. 25 Missouri, No. 13 Alabama, No. 11 LSU, No. 10 Oklahoma, No. 5 Texas and No. 9 Ole Miss, six teams in the preseason AP Top 25.

Non-conference offers UL Monroe, a road trip to Minnesota and FCS Tennessee Tech. Those are the realistic wins.

The Egg Bowl moves to Black Friday. Mississippi State travels to No. 9 Ole Miss on Friday, Nov. 27 at noon on ABC, a standalone national window.

Mississippi State 2026 futures odds

Lebby's job status is the subtext for every number here. He has a multi-year deal and a large buyout, but the administration has made clear that improvement is expected. Seven wins has been floated as the threshold, though Mississippi State has moved on from coaches with expensive buyouts before.

The case for improvement is real but narrow. Arnett's return is a genuine upgrade if his previous defensive results carry over, and Taylor is the most highly regarded quarterback recruit the program has ever signed. Lebby has called this his most talented roster.

The case against is the schedule. Six ranked opponents means the margin for error is essentially zero. Mississippi State needs to win all three non-conference games and then find three SEC victories against a slate where it will be an underdog in nearly every one.

Weigh it against the rest of the college football futures board.

Season-long markets also trade on prediction markets, and prices between venues do not always agree. A Polymarket invite code or a Kalshi promo gets you started, and we collect current NCAAF prediction market promos in one place. Those platforms quote in cents rather than American odds, so a contract at 35¢ means roughly 35%, and a prediction markets odds converter translates between the two.

Betting Mississippi State point spreads

A point spread bet turns on margin of victory rather than who wins.

Take the Friday, Nov. 27 Egg Bowl at No. 9 Ole Miss. These are illustrative prices, so pull live college football odds for the real number:

  • Mississippi State +14.5 (-110)
  • Ole Miss -14.5 (-110)

Mississippi State covers by losing by 14 or fewer, or by winning outright. Ole Miss covers by winning by 15 or more. The -110 on each side is the vig: risk $1.10 to win $1.

The Bulldogs angle: Lebby's second season produced close calls against the top of the league without producing wins. Mississippi State was competitive against Texas and Tennessee and could not close either, which is the profile of a team covering numbers while losing games.

That matters more in 2026 than it did in 2025, because six ranked opponents means Mississippi State will be receiving large numbers all season. A team that stays within reach of good opponents while losing is exactly what a bettor wants from a heavy underdog, and the spread record should look considerably better than the win-loss column.

The offensive line is the variable that could break it. A unit rebuilt almost entirely through the portal, with one returning starter, is the most likely reason for those close games to become blowouts. Track it through the against the spread standings.

A bet365 promo code gets you a second price to compare, and we track college football betting promos as they change.

Betting Mississippi State totals

An over/under asks whether the combined final score lands above or below the posted number. At 52.5, a 31-24 final goes over and a 27-24 final stays under.

  • Over 52.5 (-110)
  • Under 52.5 (-110)

The two coordinators pull totals in opposite directions, which makes this a genuinely interesting market.

Lebby's veer and shoot is an air raid derivative built on tempo and vertical passing, and Taylor's dual-threat ability adds quarterback runs on top of it. That is a scheme designed to score quickly and often, which inflates possessions and totals.

Arnett's history points the other way. His Mississippi State defenses ranked among the top five in the SEC three years running, and if he restores anything close to that, the Bulldogs become a very different total than the one their 2025 numbers suggest.

The gap between those two identities is where the value sits. Opening totals will price off last season, when the offense was inconsistent and the defense was ordinary. If Arnett's unit improves while Lebby's offense finds its footing with Taylor, the scoring shape changes substantially. Public betting data helps you read which side money favors, since it separates the share of tickets from the share of dollars.

Our analysts work the same angles in weekly college football picks.

Betting the Mississippi State moneyline

A moneyline bet is a bet on who wins outright. Margin is irrelevant.

Mississippi State will be an underdog in most games. An illustrative price:

  • Mississippi State +320
  • Opponent -400

Convert to implied probability and the margin shows. Mississippi State at +320 breaks even around 23.8%; the opponent at -400 breaks even around 80%. Those sum past 100%, and the excess is the sportsbook's cut.

On payouts, $10 on Mississippi State at +320 returns $42 for a $32 profit. The same $10 on the favorite at -400 returns $12.50 for a $2.50 profit. An odds calculator handles any price.

The Arizona State upset is the relevant precedent. Mississippi State beat a No. 12 team last season during its 4-0 start, which is the kind of result that pays substantially at these prices. Davis Wade Stadium also draws well, averaging 53,186 last season despite the record, which ranked 38th nationally.

The Egg Bowl deserves separate treatment. Rivalry moneylines attract heavier public money than the matchup justifies, and a Black Friday national broadcast amplifies it further.

Mississippi State player props

College prop markets aren't offered in every legal state, so availability varies even where you can bet the game.

Taylor is the most interesting prop board in the SEC and among the harder ones to price. He appeared in 11 games as a true freshman with only two starts, producing five passing touchdowns and eight rushing scores, which is a small sample skewed heavily toward the run.

That distribution is the key. Oddsmakers pricing a quarterback with more rushing than passing touchdowns face a choice about which side of his game to weight, and in Lebby's system both should expand. Rushing and anytime-touchdown props are the likelier place for a mispricing than passing yardage, which will be capped early by an unsettled offensive line.

Bothwell's rushing props carry a specific caveat. He led the team with 677 yards on 142 carries despite injury, and a fully healthy season could make him the program's first 1,000-yard back in years. But Taylor's own carries and the addition of shiftier backs like Xavier Gayten cap the ceiling on any single line.

Evans returns as the leading receiver with Missouri transfer Marquis Johnson added opposite him, which gives the passing game two credible targets in a system that throws vertically.
