Tomoyuki Sugano is simply not a good starter despite his decent ERA. His estimated stats are catastrophic, as he owns a 7.22 xERA and 5.46 FIP. Those numbers compared to his current 4.69 ERA are all you need to know about the regression coming for Sugano. The thing with Sugano is he doesn’t strike out anyone, so almost every ball is put in play against him. While he’s been super fortunate with batted balls, I doubt that continues, especially in the hot summer months. Coors Field is already a hitter's dream park, but that effect only gets amplified deep into the summer, especially against a pitcher who doesn’t miss bats. While I know the Royals offense isn’t very good, I do know they can hit a pitcher like Sugano, who ranks in the worst percentile in baseball in xBA. Michael Wacha is a decent arm, but I have no problem fading him at this stage of his career. Wacha currently owns a 3.60 ERA with a 4.25 xERA, 4.38 xFIP, and 4.42 SIERA. He’s a clear regression candidate and now has to pitch in a brutal environment. Wacha has also been nearly a full run worse on the road this season. I think the Rockies jump on him early after a long road trip. Honestly, the real reason I love this over is how bad these bullpens grade out. These teams rank 28th and 29th in bullpen xERA over the last month. Both teams are in sell mode and are simply testing arms at this point. I think we see a big night from both offenses. Our model projects this total at 12 runs. Give me over 11.
