Athletics vs Angels MLB Betting Preview

Athletics Betting Preview

Last Sunday, Angels right-hander Walbert Urena tossed five shutout innings while striking out six against the Athletics in Sacramento.

He continued his strong rookie campaign and lowered his ERA to 2.41 before a second consecutive start against the Athletics. However, last night, they would take advantage of a second look at him as they roughed up him for seven earned runs on six hits in 4 and 1/3 innings in a 9-3 victory.

The Athletics broke the game open with a seven-run fourth inning with five different players recording RBIs in the inning.

The Athletics did their damage without a home run and recorded just one extra-base hit, not what you would expect from a team that is seventh in the MLB in home runs. A typical source of extra base hits for them is Nick Kurtz and Shea Langeliers.

In his second season, Kurtz is slashing .280/.426/.530 with 15 doubles, 19 home runs, and an MLB-leading 64 runs batted in. The Angels have found some success attacking him with elevated fastballs this season, but that has not stopped him from hitting .333 with a home run and 13 RBI against them this season.

While Kurtz should have been a finalist to start at first base for the American League in the All-Star game, Langeliers is at catcher.

He joins Kurtz with 19 home runs this season and is tied 11th in the MLB. Tonight presents an interesting matchup for him as he is hitting .364 with seven home runs against left-handed pitchers. However, he is 0-for-5 with three strikeouts against Reid Detmers. If he starts tonight, he will catch for tonight's starter Jack Perkins.

Given Perkins' 6.26 ERA, you would expect that the Athletics will need to score tonight as he has allowed three earned runs in his last four starts. However, his underlying metrics have been strong as his expected ERA, FIP, and SIERA range between 3.27 and 3.82 this season.

He also ranks in the 82nd percentile in strikeout rate and 92nd percentile in chase rate. Perkins has fanned six or more in three of his last four starts.

Los Angeles Angels Betting Preview

The Angels have not made the playoffs since the 2014 season and have not had a winning record since the 2015 season. Sitting 14 games under .500, they decided a change was needed in the front office as they fired general manager Perry Minasian yesterday.

Longtime Cardinals executive John Mozeliak will take over as interim GM, but his interim tenure did not get the club back in the win column last night.

They continue to play without Mike Trout, who is on the IL with a hamstring injury. However, he did resume baseball activities on Tuesday, so his return may not be too far off. They are 4-4 since he went down and have averaged 5.6 runs per game. A pair of surprising sources of offense have been Denzer Guzman and Donovan Walton.

Against the Athletics last weekend, Guzman hit three home runs and drove in six runs. While they were able to keep him in the park last night, the 22-year-old recorded two more hits against the Athletics last night.

Meanwhile, Walton has largely been a career journeyman, but he has taken advantage of his opportunity in Anaheim, hitting .329 with seven doubles, three home runs, 12 RBI, and a .877 OPS in 82 at-bats. He hit a three-run home run off Perkins last Sunday and extended his hitting streak to 10 games last night.

Like Perkins, Detmers will be facing his opponent for a second consecutive start. Detmers is one of the more high-variance pitchers in the game, often dazzling like a recent three-start stretched in which he allowed just seven hits and one run over 20 innings while striking out 18 batters.

Then, the A's got to him for six hits, five earned runs, and four walks last Sunday.

Detmers has six starts allowing one run or fewer this season and four starts allowing four runs or more, two of which are against the Athletics, who have personally put a dent in his ERA. In 82 and 2/3 innings against everyone else, Detmers has a 3.05 ERA, compared to a 10.03 ERA against the Athletics.

Athletics vs Angels Pick, Betting Analysis

While Kurtz has torn up MLB since his call-up, he has picked on the Angels in particular. In 21 career games against them, he is hitting .296 with 7 home runs, 23 RBI, and a 1.050 OPS.

He has averaged 3.3 hits, runs, and runs batted in per game in that span, clearing this line in 13 of 21 (62%) games. For just the RBI portion of the combo, he is +170 tonight.

Kurtz does not have a RBI yet against Detmers yet, but he is 3-for-9 with three walks against him. After recording six HRBI last night, just two will clear this line tonight.

Pick: Nick Kurtz Over 1.5 Hits + Runs + Runs Batted In (-105, DraftKings)
