Athletics Betting Preview: Good Weather and Matchup
The Athletics bounced back in a big way on Saturday to even up the series behind an excellent pitching performance from JP Sears, who held the Yankees scoreless. However, it was far from a one-man show as the bats showed up in the middle innings to chase Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt before tacking on late against the bullpen.
They built a lot of momentum yesterday, and we should see it carry over to the early part of today's matchup as the lineup gets to welcome back Marcus Stroman. Prior to his injury, it appeared as if Stroman was on a steep decline.
In three big league starts, Stroman posted an 11.57 ERA with a 2.04 WHIP in just 9.1 innings of work. His rehab stint was lengthy, but his results were not promising, as his last outing at Double-A Somerset ended with five earned runs allowed on ten hits and just one strikeout.
This A's lineup is young, but has plenty of upside, especially against right-handed pitching. They rank 11th in wRC+ and ISO against righties. With Stroman not missing bats and the wind blowing out of Yankee Stadium this afternoon, we could see them do damage in a hurry.
New York Yankees Betting Preview: Slumping Offense
On the flip side of this matchup, the Yankees will try to rebound after being blanked offensively yesterday. However, they will have to go through an old friend to do so.
Luis Severino takes the ball for the Athletics, and he has all the tools for success this afternoon in the Bronx. While his 4.83 ERA may not show it, Severino has pitched well considering his home park is now the most hitter-friendly environment in the league.
Despite that, Severino has been excellent at keeping the ball in the park, posting an elite flyball and home run to flyball ratio. Those two metrics are key to his success this afternoon, as the conditions are certainly going to be hitter-friendly.
Sevy gets the Yankees at a great time since they are slumping. Over the last two weeks, the Bronx Bombers have had a team wRC+ of just 87, and their ISO is 26% worse than their season average.
Look for Severino to neutralize the Yankees' power and keep his team in the game.
Athletics vs Yankees Prediction, Betting Analysis
If yesterday wasn't enough, the A's are primed to prove themselves against the Yankees again this afternoon. They have a massive starting pitching advantage and have the power to punish a declining Stroman.
While I don't expect Stroman's leash to be long, I'm shortening this game by taking the A's in the first five, as Severino should contain the Yankees while receiving early run support.
