Reds vs Nationals Pick, MLB Betting Preview

For my best bet on Tuesday, I’m hopping on the bandwagon of my favorite young pitcher in baseball, Chase Burns.

Burns looked exactly like an Ace should in his last start, throwing six innings of two-hit, two-run baseball with 10 strikeouts against the Rockies.

I suspect he’ll put forth a similar output in this matchup, and the books are still pricing him at somewhat of a discount. The Reds are listed below -140 on the moneyline, and Burns' strikeout prop is set at 5.5, which is juiced toward the over.

The Nationals are not an easy team to strike out, with a 23.5% team strikeout rate that’s the fifth-lowest among MLB lineups. Even worse, that mark drops to 19.6% against right-handed pitchers.

That said, Burns is sporting a 33.8% strikeout rate through four starts, which includes a blowup start against the Red Sox at Fenway where it was suspected he was tipping pitches. Otherwise, he dominated the Rockies, struck out eight Yankees across five innings, and struck out seven Phillies across 4 ⅔ innings.

The Yankees are a strikeout-heavy squad, but the Phillies strike out at the same rate as the Nationals. If anything, that tough start against Boston is deflating his odds in the market.

I’m looking to bet the Reds and Burns as much as possible until the books catch up to his talent level. I might even bet him to win NLROY.

All together, I’ll be on the Reds ML and Burns Over 5.5 strikeouts — a same-game parlay of those two picks pays out at +160 on DraftKings.
