Guardians vs Rays MLB Betting Preview
The Guardians will look to once again navigate a difficult situation in a do-or-die road matchup, having already won two must-win games on the road against Chicago in the ALDS.
Cleveland finished the regular season 44-37 away from home and has gone 3-1 as a visitor this postseason, including a split in Tampa at the start of the series.
Drew Rasmussen and the Rays peppered the strike zone in Game 5 to counter Cleveland's scrappy, disciplined approach at the plate. Freddy Peralta leaned heavily on his fastball in his Game 2 start and will likely take a similar approach Monday, leaving it up to the Guardians to make adjustments.
The Guardians held a wRC+ of 101 versus right-handed pitching throughout the final month of the regular season and hold an expected weighted on-base average of .314 versus righties this postseason.
Though the Guardians may have a little bit of added confidence in this spot given their experience thus far in these playoffs, their pitching plan is quite concerning, as they're once again not offering a traditional starter after using seven relievers in Game 4 and six in Game 5.
Shawn Armstrong and Daniel Espino are the most likely arms to open things up for the Guardians, before a potential combination of Tanner Bibee and Joey Cantillo.
Kevin Cash has gotten a fair bit of length out of his starters in this series and will certainly expect Peralta to hang around longer than whoever ultimately starts for Cleveland.
It's no surprise Peralta adjusted his pitch mix since arriving in Tampa Bay, though his heightened fastball usage in Game 2 may also have come down to the added velocity the offering held.
Regardless, while the Guardians lineup isn't known for power, they can play scrappy and will likely be better prepared for the Rays starter this time around.
Peralta's betting total is set at just 13.5 outs, so oddsmakers expect Cash to lean on the luxury of a better-rested bullpen in most game scripts.
In a postseason where traditional starters have worked fewer innings than ever, statistics depicting pitchers' decreased effectiveness when working for the third, fourth, or fifth time in a series have become a large talking point.
Those splits should work in favor of the Rays lineup in this matchup, as Cleveland does not have many overall dominant arms ready to work, and they should be quite familiar with many of the ones available on Monday.
Tampa Bay has worn out Cleveland's pitching staff by recording 23 hits in Games 4 and 5, and the lineup has looked like the one that led the AL in xwOBA this season despite playing out of a strong AL East division.

Guardians vs Rays Pick, Betting Analysis
Stephen Vogt and the Guardians staff have proven adept at piecing together difficult matchups for opposing lineups this season, but doing so in this do-or-die spot with an overworked staff should be difficult.
Tampa Bay's lineup was relentless in Games 4 and 5, which sets it up well to continue doing damage Monday as it looks to secure the AL pennant.
The Guardians offense has been effective this postseason (at least relative to the quality of pitching faced), and I expect them to make some adjustments and use Peralta more effectively in this outing than in Game 2.
Given how unconvincing the Guardians' pitching plan is and the possibility that they hit Peralta more effectively this time around, a total of 6.5 runs seems low.
At -125 or better, there looks to be value in betting the over.
Pick: Over 6.5 (-119, DraftKings | Play to -125)
