Colombia vs Panama World Baseball Classic Picks

Heading into the World Baseball Classic, Panama was a team that our own Sean Zerillo was high on because of their MLB additions (Miguel Amaya, Edmundo Sosa, Jose Caballero, Leo Jimenez), alongside the roster’s speed and defensive versatility.

In three games, Panama lost to Cuba (3-1) despite going 1-for-9 with RISP, lost to Puerto Rico (4-3) in extra innings, and led Canada 4-3 entering the ninth inning before a rain delay. This team isn't bad!

In Colombia’s three WBC games so far, it’s been blown out by Puerto Rico, Canada, and Cuba by a combined score of 20-6.

As such, I think this sets up as a good buy-low spot on Panama, given we can bet it at essentially even money against a Colombian team that is likely far less talented — the books are giving us a nice discount thanks to Panama's unlucky start.

In his WBC preview, Zerillo noted that his WBC team projections were far higher for Panama (13th in hitting, 12th in pitching) than for Colombia (18th in hitting, 14th in pitching, and 19th in baserunning). Yet, the futures markets were seemingly higher on Colombia, setting up a perfect spot to bet on Panama in a head-to-head matchup.

Zerillo projects Panama as about a -122 moneyline favorite. I love this spot and price for Panama.

Pick: Panama ML (-110 or Better)
