Giants vs Rays MLB Betting Preview
By Derek Carty
Editor's Note: This written best bet is a transcription from the latest episode of the Payoff Pitch podcast.
My first of three picks in this game, starting with the shortest odds, is Rays' third baseman Junior Caminero hitting a home run. I like it down to about +333.
However, I’m most excited about Taylor Walls hitting a home run. That’s good down to around +1500. And the third one is Jonathan Aranda, which I’ll take down to +700.
What we’re really looking at here is the Giants' starter, Robbie Ray. As a lefty, he has a history of giving up home runs and fly balls, and this is actually a sneaky park downgrade for him. We think of Tropicana Field as a pitcher’s park overall, and it is, but when you isolate right-handed home runs, it plays significantly better than Oracle Park in San Francisco.
Oracle suppresses righty homers by about 20%, while The BAT X has Tropicana Field actually boosting right-handed home runs by 3–4%. That’s a pretty meaningful swing.
All three of these guys will be hitting right-handed against Ray, giving them the platoon advantage plus home-field advantage. Combined with these plus-money odds, it makes for three really strong home run bets tonight.
