Dodgers vs Rockies MLB Betting Preview

Los Angeles Dodgers Betting Preview

We haven't seen a ton of Blake Snell this season, and even with a 10-strikeout performance in his return from the injured list, it's still going to take some time to figure out where the veteran is at following an elbow injury.

That start came at home against the Royals, probably the most ideal team to pitch to right now. He only walked one, and now on the season he has 15 K's in nine innings.

The bad part is that his lone start prior to last week's gem came in May, and he walked two and gave up five runs on six hits in three frames against Atlanta. On his latest rehab assignment, he finished up with a rocky outing, surrendering three runs on five hits (two home runs) and four walks to the Angels' Triple-A affiliate. Before that, he struck out nine over four near-perfect innings.

We've always known Snell to be volatile, but home runs and walks are really where he's traditionally fallen short when he doesn't have his best stuff. With that said, he allowed just three homers in 61 1/3 innings last year and six in 104 frames the year prior, so maybe he's turned a new leaf. His ground-ball rate was up over 50% last season, though he did have a poor 18.6% Pull Air%, which is around two points worse than average.

We can expect more ground balls from the lefty this season given where his batted-ball trends are currently pointing, but Monday may not be one of those nights. The Rockies rank seventh-lowest in rate of contact on the ground and sport a fair .166 Isolated Power, tailoring their offense towards their home park. They are only walking in 8.3% of plate appearances, however, so Snell's frequent control issues may not rear their head.

Colorado Rockies Betting Preview

We haven't yet touched on the Dodgers' offensive shortcomings, and we'll do so here as we examine Tomoyuki Sugano's chances on Monday night. He draws a team ranked just 24th in wRC+ in the last two weeks, running a poor .158 ISO, incredibly low 6.8% walk rate and a .228 average.

The Dodgers have the fourth-lowest ground-ball rate all season, but own the 11th-highest in the last two weeks as their fly-ball rate quickly declines. This is quite interesting, then, given the 36-year-old Sugano is currently in the 22nd percentile when it comes to ground balls, instead running a colossal 31.3% fly-ball rate to sit seven points higher than the league average.

He's always been a fly-ball guy, and with that he's allowed a crazy 57 home runs in just 270 2/3 career big-league innings. While you might be a bit optimistic given the Dodgers' slump, which we've covered above, it's worth noting that L.A. has still hit the eighth-most home runs in the last two weeks and ranks second in OPS to fly-ball pitchers.

Sugano should have a tough time containing the Dodgers, then, if L.A. is going to be afforded the opportunity to put the ball in the air. To make matters worse, Colorado's 82 wRC+ against lefties ranks second-worst in baseball, and against righties they have a better 95 wRC+, which is five spots higher in the ranks.

Dodgers vs Rockies Pick, Betting Analysis

This total is sky-high at 10.5 runs — and climbing. This almost certainly is because of Sugano, who is in an incredibly dreadful matchup against a Dodgers team that is looking to put the ball in the air more. It's just hard to find reasons to believe in the righty, who was bad last year with Baltimore and who did briefly turn it around this season only to see his expected numbers fall apart in the middle of July.

The thing is, though, even with eight homers against Sugano in the last five starts, he's allowed 11 earned runs. He's just not putting many on base with a very low 5.5% walk rate, and somehow he's avoided giving up a large number of hits despite a .309 xBA and a bad outfield defense.

I don't really worry too much about Snell here given the Rockies cannot hit lefties and have not been walking much at all, so this is a question of just how much you trust Sugano. He has a fair 4.09 ERA this month and did hold the Dodgers to three runs the last time he faced them in L.A. It's a hard call, but I have to trust the data and fade the veteran. L.A. is just too good when it's putting the ball in the air, and as it's pressing with the lack of walks, a meeting with a strike-thrower in Sugano should turn things around on offense.
