Doug Ziefel’s Dodgers vs Rays Preview

Los Angeles Dodgers Betting Preview

These teams have traded shutout losses, and the Dodgers were on the wrong end of one in Saturday's ballgame.

However, with the hot and humid environment expected at George M. Steinbrenner Field, we should see their bats heat up again.

Despite injuries and slumping stars, the Dodgers are still the most formidable lineup in the National League. They lead the NL in xWOBACON and barrel rate.

So while strikeouts have been a bit of an issue this season, when they connect, it's likely to cause damage.

We should see them excel in a matchup against Joe Boyle on Sunday. Boyle has burst back onto the scene with the Rays and has flashed electric stuff in his handful of outings.

However, when contact has been made against Boyle, it's been hard and in the air, as he's only produced groundballs a third of the time. In this hitting environment against this lineup, that is not a tendency you want.

Boyle's length is a question mark in this one, but if the Dodgers order gets to see him twice, they should be on the board early.

Tampa Bay Rays Betting Preview

The Rays decided to be conservative buyers at the deadline as they are only four games out of a Wild Card spot despite some of their veteran bats receiving interest from other contenders.

While it remains to be seen whether or not that decision will pay off, Tampa Bay will have to contend with Yoshinobu Yamamoto on Sunday.

Yamamoto dialed things back in during his five starts in July and is in line for more success during his first start of August.

The Rays have excellent numbers against righties, ranking seventh among MLB lineups in wRC+ and first in BABIP. However, they do whiff quite a bit and haven't put the ball in the air much.

Those two tendencies should allow Yamamoto to thrive as he's one of the game's best at producing strikeouts and grounders.

Dodgers vs Rays Prediction, Betting Analysis

The Dodgers are sizable favorites in this one and deservedly so.

They have a Cy Young-caliber arm on the mound, and their potent lineup is in a great spot to succeed.

However, I'm not keen on laying a hefty moneyline price when you can back Yamamoto to record a win here for a far better price.

Yes, a bullpen blow-up ruins this angle, but we should see Yamamoto work into the sixth at minimum while receiving ample run support.

Pick: Yoshinobu Yamamoto to record a win (+105, Fanatics)
