Giants vs Red Sox MLB Betting Preview
I’ve become the resident Triple-A baseball analyst at Action Network, and if you’ve followed along at all over the past few months, you’ve seen plenty of Sacramento River Cats talk.
Sacramento has been loaded since May, when the Giants moved all of their studs up from Double-A.
This crop of talent should help the Giants play spoiler at the MLB level over the final month of the regular season.
San Francisco gave a solid effort in this series opener on Friday, and while the Giants ultimately lost 6-4, I think they cover +1.5 more often than not in that game — Boston didn’t do much outside of a five-run outburst in the third inning.
Giants vs Red Sox Pick, Betting Analysis
I think Giants +1.5 is a good bet tonight.
This starting pitching matchup should be even.
Blade Tidwell is beginning to benefit from some extended time at the MLB level. Tidwell has been stuck down in Triple-A since being acquired from the Mets at the trade deadline last year. He pitched well down in Sacramento, and with Robbie Ray and Tyler Mahle being shipped off at the trade deadline, a rotation spot finally opened up for him.
Two of his first three starts have been very good. He was great against Houston and at Texas, but ran into some command issues against the Rockies — I think that six-run, five-walk outing was an anomaly, as he’s been a very good command pitcher in his professional career.
Tidwell should benefit from most of the players in the Red Sox lineup having almost no experience against him. Meanwhile, some of the Rockies hitters have seen Tidwell down in the Pacific Coast League.
Patrick Sandoval is a veteran Southpaw, but he’s been working his way back from UCL surgery over the past year. He is, at best, an average MLB pitcher.
Although Sandoval has a gaudy 1.85 WHIP since re-joining the Red Sox rotation. He throws mostly junk, as he’s lost most of his fastball velocity and can’t generate many whiffs. He also gives up too many fly balls.
The Giants haven’t hit well recently, but this seems like a decent spot to find their swing.
The Red Sox have the better bullpen, but San Francisco’s relief corps is better rested, so I cap that matchup somewhat evenly. Add that to what I expect to be an even starting pitching matchup, and I expect a very even game.
Taking the Giants +1.5 at a very fair price is a good bet.
