Tanner McGrath’s Blue Jays vs Rockies Preview
Our MLB betting guru, Sean Zerillo, projects over 11.9 runs for Tuesday’s game in Denver.
That’s enough for me to hit the Over.
One of the biggest reasons for this wager is the weather. It’s projected to be low-to-mid-90s in Denver with near-double-digit MPH winds heading out toward right field. RotoGrinders WeatherEdge projects a +21.5% Home Run Factor and a +7.4% Total Runs Factor, while Zerillo has factored in a +11% overall scoring factor.
We’re also getting a hitter-friendly umpire in Derek Thomas, who adds about 2% to Zerillo’s projected total.
You don’t have to convince me to fade Rockies starting pitcher Anthony Molina, a rookie reliever who’s struggled in 40 MLB appearances (6.85 ERA, 4.45 xFIP). If this ends up being a bullpen game for Colorado, manager Warren Schaeffer doesn’t have many reliable arms to turn to (4.55 bullpen xFIP, 28th).
Meanwhile, the Jays' offense is white hot, leading MLB in wRC+ over the past month (134). They dropped 15 on the Rockies in Monday’s matchup, and I expect a similarly high-scoring result.
The more underrated part of this handicap is Colorado’s lineup, which has looked really good against right-handed pitching over the past two weeks (124 wRC+, seventh). The Rox boast four legitimate offensive weapons: Hunter Goodman, Jordan Beck, Mickey Moniak, and Tyler Freeman.
I think they can put up some runs against Berrios, who is due for some negative regression (3.84 ERA, 4.68 xFIP) and has seen a drastic decline in stuff (career-low 90 Stuff+, career-low 93 MPH fastball velocity, career-low 92.1 MPH sinker velocity).
Pick: Over 11.5 (-115, BetMGM)
