I have been thoroughly impressed with the Charlotte Hornets early in the season. They are playing like a confident, well-coached basketball team that understands how to weaponize the math of the modern NBA.
Offensively, they put you in a bind, and I love the specific matchup advantages they hold in this game. Naz Reid is going to be able to completely space out Washington's frontcourt; guys like Alex Sarr and Anthony Davis are not going to want to drift out to the perimeter to guard him.
I also love the matchup of Brandon Miller going to work against the Wizards' wings, even with Kyshawn George operating as a very capable defender.
The Hornets just have too much structural competence right now.
Washington Wizards Betting Preview
On the other side of the floor, the Washington Wizards are a team I simply cannot trust against well-coached opponents.
The Wizards might be able to scrape together a couple of random wins here and there by beating up on the truly bad teams in the league, but I have not been impressed with how they are playing or the overall makeup of their roster.
The glaring issue for Washington is their shot profile. The Wizards currently rank in the bottom five in three-point rate.
If you fall into a math deficit against a team like Charlotte that embraces the three-point line, you are going to get completely buried.

This is a pretty simple handicap for me. You simply do not want to be a team that struggles to shoot threes going up against a Hornets squad that can beat you strictly with math.
My personal power ratings actually make the Hornets a 1.5-point favorite in this spot, so catching points with them is an automatic play.
It is true that the numerical edge isn't huge, but from a pure matchup perspective, I love the spot. Give me the Hornets +1.5.
