The Pistons are defending at an elite level right now, establishing a legitimate defensive identity that lets them hang around in games.
Offensively, however, the Pistons are starting to come back down to earth a little bit. They are currently posting an offensive rating of just 111.8.
While their defense travels and keeps the floor relatively high, they simply lack the elite offensive firepower to reliably blow teams out or turn games into track meets.
Brooklyn Nets Preview
I know it might sound crazy to praise a winless 0-4 team, but I've actually liked some of what I've seen from the Nets defensively.
While their overall defensive numbers haven't been great, the Nets have shown flashes of switchability and versatility that suggest they are better on that end than the raw stats indicate.
Offensively, though, the Nets are horrendous. They average 116.7 points in some spots, but their underlying offense ranks in the bottom seven in the league.
They'll struggle mightily to generate quality looks against this stout Detroit defense, but by hook or by crook, they should be able to hang around in this game defensively.

NBA Cup games can inherently be a bit dangerous and unpredictable, but the general rule of thumb early in these tournament settings is to lean toward the unders as teams ramp up defensive intensity.
When you match up a horrendous Nets offense against a Pistons team defending the lights out—while Detroit’s own offense sits at a mediocre 111.8 rating—the math clearly points to a grind.
I have this total projected down around 219, which gives me enough of a mathematical edge to confidently play the under.
