Timberwolves vs Spurs NBA Playoffs Game 1 Preview

Minnesota Timberwolves Betting Preview, Analysis

Let’s be real about the state of the Timberwolves right now: they are a mess. We are looking at a roster that has been absolutely shredded by the injury bug at the worst possible time.

With Donte DiVincenzo out with that Achilles tear and Anthony Edwards dealing with a knee issue, Minnesota's offensive infrastructure is basically in ruins. But here is the thing about the Wolves—they are still a professional basketball team with a deep defensive identity, and the market is treating them like they’re a G-League squad.

There is a specific situational trend that I find fascinating for this Game 1. It involves teams that are NOT coming off a Game 7, were a home underdog in their previous series' closeout game, and are now playing as a road underdog in the following round. Historically, these teams are just 3-14 straight up. They almost never win the game. However, they are 7-8-2 against the spread in those spots.

It is essentially a coin flip against the number. We saw this same script with Magic-Pistons earlier in these playoffs. These teams are exhausted and disrespected, but they have enough pride to keep the final margin within the realm of dignity.

I’ve gone on record with a series best bet of Spurs to win Game 1 / Wolves to win the series. I like the Wolves in this spot long-term, and I think they can show enough in Game 1 to prove that the double-digit spread is an overreaction.

Minnesota's identity is built on defensive intensity, and that doesn't disappear just because a few stars are in street clothes. The Wolves should be able to slow the pace, make San Antonio earn their buckets in the half-court, and rely on their remaining vets to keep things competitive.

San Antonio Spurs Betting Preview, Analysis

The Spurs enter this series as the shiny new toy of the Western Conference, and for good reason. The market is already starting to move in their direction, especially regarding the total.

We saw this line open at 216.5, and it’s already ticked up to 217.5 in several spots, signaling that sharp money is expecting a higher-scoring affair than the rock fight narrative suggests.

The Spurs' defensive scheme is built around Victor Wembanyama protecting the rim, which allows their perimeter players to take more risks. However, they have a specific defensive quirk: they tend to collapse the paint aggressively.

The Spurs don't play a traditional 2-man game where they trust Victor and a guard to handle a screen alone. Instead, they crash. The idea is: "If Victor is there and we all crash, the other team is definitely not scoring inside." While this is elite for stopping layups, it creates vulnerabilities on the perimeter.

San Antonio gives up a high volume of corner threes because of this collapsing identity. We saw it in the first round against the Blazers, and I expect it to be a recurring theme here. They are going to dare Minnesota’s remaining shooters to beat them from the outside while they focus on negating easy looks at the rim.

Timberwolves vs Spurs Pick, Betting Analysis

Timberwolves +13.5

I think the spread for this Game 1 is plain wrong. I have this number modeled at Spurs -10.8, even with the current injuries factored in.

Edwards is the real wildcard here. Ant is worth somewhere between three and five points to the spread. So, even if he doesn't play, 13.5 is a major over-correction.

The Spurs are likely to win this game, but the gap between these two teams shouldn't be two touchdowns, even with a shorthanded Wolves squad.

I expect Minnesota to compete, grind out possessions, and keep Game 1 within the number tonight.

Naz Reid Over 1.5 Three-Pointers Made

San Antonio’s defense is designed to funnel the ball toward the corners.

With the Wolves' guard rotation thinned out, Naz Reid is going to play a massive amount of minutes. He will be on the floor long enough to see the volume required to hit this.

More importantly, his shoulder is finally feeling better. Chris Finch has been vocal about the fact that Naz is moving better and has responded well to treatment. He didn't need a major intervention; he just needed rest.

If Naz is healthy and the Spurs are collapsing on every drive, he is going to have a bunch of good looks from the corner. Reid is a high-level shooter, and if he gets 5 or 6 attempts tonight, he should be able to knock down two of them with ease.

Matt Moore's Timberwolves vs Spurs Best Bets

  • Timberwolves +13.5 (-118)
  • Naz Reid Over 1.5 Three-Pointers Made (-120)
