Nuggets vs. Warriors NBA Preview
On Tuesday night, the Warriors pulled off a 119-109 victory against the Lakers. Jimmy Butler led the way with 31 points, five rebounds and four assists while getting to the line 16 times.
Stephen Curry added 23 points and iced the game with one of his patented late-game dagger 3s.
However, the most important development from that game may have been the activity level of Jonathan Kuminga.
After arduous offseason negotiations, head coach Steve Kerr inserted the 23-year-old into the starting lineup, and he responded with nine rebounds, six assists, and four made 3s on his way to 17 points.
The Warriors will need a similar effort from him tonight.
The Warriors return home tonight to take on the Nuggets, who have dominated this series, winning nine of the last 10 meetings.
However, Golden State did take the lone matchup featuring Butler on the roster, 118-106, in San Francisco last April.
Both teams have high aspirations this season after falling in the Western Conference Semifinals, with the Nuggets pushing the eventual champions to seven games.
After a few years of stagnation following their 2023 championship, the Nuggets were among the most active teams this offseason as they try to maximize Nikola Jokic's prime.
They moved on from long-time starter Michael Porter Jr. and brought in Cameron Johnson, fan favorite Bruce Brown, Tim Hardaway Jr., and Jonas Valanciunas, who should help Jokic get more rest this season if he provides quality minutes off the bench.
For years, we've seen Porter thrive playing off Jokic, albeit inconsistently.
For that reason, I expect Johnson to shine in Denver as well.
He's a career 39% 3-point shooter, and playing with arguably the NBA's best passer could allow him to surpass 200 made triples for the first time in his career.
Meanwhile, Jokic has dominated the Warriors of late due to Kerr's preference for small lineups.
While Draymond Green remains one of the league's best defenders at 6'7", Jokic is still a difficult matchup. Al Horford should see plenty of Jokic tonight, particularly with the Warriors already announcing that he won't play tomorrow.
Still, Horford will have his hands full with the two-time MVP.
Nuggets vs. Warriors Prediction, Betting Analysis
While he faces a difficult matchup tonight, Cameron Johnson should get plenty of open looks playing alongside Jokic, as mentioned earlier.
The Warriors held the Lakers to 8-for-32 (25%) from 3-point range on Tuesday night. However, Rui Hachimura made three of his six attempts, while Luka Doncic finished with nine assists.
Although Johnson has expanded his game over the past few seasons, the bulk of his field goal attempts still come from beyond the arc.
If he gets up seven or eight attempts tonight, I like his chances to knock down at least three.
Meanwhile, Jokic has averaged 31.3 points, 12.7 rebounds, and 9.4 assists over his last 10 games against the Warriors. I like him to record at least 45 PRA tonight.
For the Warriors, Curry has a favorable matchup due to the drop coverage the Nuggets like to play. He's scored 20 or more in each of his last five games against Denver, including 36 in their most recent meeting.
Kuminga's role was limited in that game, but he's averaged 14.6 points per game over his last five against the Nuggets.
If he delivers another all-around performance like the one he had against the Lakers, 25 PRA looks like solid value tonight.
