The regional showcases of the California Classic and the Utah Summer League were fantastic appetizers, but the main course has officially arrived. Our betting lab is resetting its baseline metrics as the center of the basketball universe shifts to the desert. Welcome to Day 1 of the Las Vegas Summer League.

Today unleashes a loaded 7-game betting buffet, mapping out a marathon on the hardwood that tips off at 3:30 p.m. ET and runs continuously all the way through the final late-night window at 11:00 p.m. ET.

The training wheels are officially off, and the market inefficiencies are sitting right there on the floor. Let's get into my NBA Summer League picks and predictions for Thursday, July 9.

Spurs vs. Hawks Spread Pick

Hawks -2.5 (-110)

This is a case of backing a high-functioning offensive program against a rotation that is stuck in the mud.

The San Antonio Spurs concluded their California Classic stretch with a winless 0-3 record, averaging a tournament-low 80.0 points per game paired with an ugly -11.3 average point differential.

While their roster features interesting pieces like Tarris Reed Jr. (11.0 PPG, 9.5 RPG) and Ja'Kobi Gillespie (12.7 PPG), their offensive process has been entirely undone by poor execution.

Gillespie is laboring through an inefficient 32.6% clip from the field and owns a -12 rating, while sophomore forward Emanuel Miller tracks at a -11.

The Hawks, on the other hand, displayed excellent operational continuity during a strong 2-1 Salt Lake City run, pacing at 93.3 points per game and a healthy +6.0 differential.

Atlanta's half-court offense functions at a superior level because they have a true high-end table-setter in Kingston Flemings, who is orchestrating the floor to the tune of 7.0 assists per night.

Flemings has a two-headed frontcourt monster to feed in Asa Newell (14.0 points, 6.0 rebounds) and Zuby Ejiofor, who is climbing the summer ranks by averaging a 13.5 points and 13.0 rebounds.

The Spurs do not possess the interior size or discipline required to keep Ejiofor off the glass or prevent Flemings from collapsing their paint coverage. Lay the short -2.5 with Atlanta this afternoon.

Pick: Hawks -2.5 (-110)

Jazz vs. Wizards Moneyline Prediction

Washington Wizards Logo
Jazz Moneyline (-135)
DraftKings Logo

Oddsmakers are giving the Washington Wizards some unearned respect in their Summer League debut based purely on draft-night name recognition.

While Washington brings the intrigue of No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa and last year's No. 6 pick Tre Johnson, they are walking straight into a buzzsaw against a Utah Jazz team that spent last weekend building chemistry and playing flawless basketball.

The Jazz finished 3-0 in round-robin play in the Salt Lake City Summer League, leading the entire summer circuit by putting up 105.0 points per game on an absurd 53.9% team field goal clip and a scorching 41.0% from deep. They have generated a massive +14.7 average point differential due to their optimized half-court spacing.

Darryn Peterson was an un-guardable force in that event, averaging 26.5 points and 7.0 assists per game on 52.8% shooting.

Peterson's gravity opens up clean perimeter looks for sophomore forward Cody Williams, who is hunting targets to the tune of 17.5 points on a blistering 57.7% shooting clip.

In July basketball, chemistry and game speed reps are everything. Expecting a debuting Wizards squad to communicate effectively through complex perimeter screening actions against Peterson and Williams is a brutal assignment.

Trust the established 3-0 squad to outclass Washington's unorganized defensive shells. I'll take the Jazz moneyline in this one.

Pick: Jazz Moneyline (-135)

Kings vs. Clippers Spread Bet

Sacramento Kings Logo
Thursday, July 9
11 p.m. ET
ESPN
Los Angeles Clippers Logo
Kings -3.5 (-115)
DraftKings Logo

The Sacramento Kings enter the desert operating as a well-oiled machine. They powered through a perfect 3-0 California Classic slate, while logging 88.3 points per game.

Sacramento owns an immense advantage because their scoring volume is anchored by two definitive options who have already adjusted to game-speed conditioning: Darius Acuff Jr. and Egor Demin.

Acuff is generating a relentless 23.5 points per game from the backcourt, while Demin has also been spectacular, matching him with 23.0 points on an efficient 55.6% shooting clip and +11 net differential.

Sacramento has great role utility as well, with Jonathan Mogbo and Isaiah Stevens providing veteran grit and steady ball-handling.

The LA Clippers are making their summer debut today behind a young roster featuring No. 5 choice Keaton Wagler, Baba Miller, and Cam Christie.

While Wagler and Christie possess high-upside perimeter traits, trying to sync their defensive rotations against a two-headed monster like Acuff and Demin on Day 1 is a tough task.

Sacramento's guards will push the tempo off live-ball turnovers, likely exposing a debuting Clippers unit that lacks any structural game-action continuity. I'll lay the -3.5 with the Kings tonight.

Pick: Kings -3.5 (-115)
