Oregon State Basketball

It's been a very strange season for Oregon State. For one, the Beavers are still playing in the WCC, which doesn't feel right.

The Beavers are coming off an ugly home loss to Sam Houston in Corvallis. That's just one of six losses to teams outside KenPom's top 100 for Oregon State.

We also can't forget that Wayne Tinkle is no stranger to Bobby Hurley hoops. Tinkle and Hurley have many matchups from their days in the Pac-12, which I think matters here. Familiarity is huge in matchups like these.

Oregon State will need to slow things down. The Beavers sit 318th in adjusted tempo. They don't want a track meet versus this Arizona State team because that plays right into the Sun Devils' hands.

Offensively, Oregon State ranks 177th in offensive efficiency and wants to let it fly from deep. Close to 50% of the Beavers' shots are from deep, and they shoot 33.9%.

The top three scorers from Oregon State do the bulk of the scoring. Josiah Lake II is a steady driver, and he leads the Beavers with 13.2 points per game.

The keys in this matchup will be Dez White and Isaiah Sy, as both are snipers. White is a smaller shooter, but Sy is a difference-maker with his 6-foot-7 frame and shooting.

Defensively, Oregon State is fairly mediocre. It ranks 192nd in defensive efficiency, but the biggest problem is rebounding. The Beavers are basically top-100 in 2-point and 3-point field goal defense, but they get bullied on the glass, allowing opponents to grab offensive boards 34% of the time.

Size isn't the problem, as Jorge Diaz Graham is 6-foot-11 and Noah Amenhauser is 7-foot-2. So, we'll see if Oregon State can figure out the rebounding woes.

Arizona State Basketball

Arizona State looks like a possible NCAA Tournament team, which I didn't expect entering the year. The Sun Devils got tabbed as the worst team in the Big 12 preseason poll, but they sit 64th in KenPom with a trio of top-100 wins.

Hurley loves his speedy guards, and his roster has two very quick ones. Moe Odum is Arizona State's leader with 16.2 points and 6.3 assists per game, but he's shooting just 38% from the field.

The strength of his game is pick-and-roll playmaking and shooting.

I love Anthony "Pig" Johnson, though. He's a disruptive player and one of the fastest players in the Big 12. He'll look to make life tough for Lake.

While teams have destroyed Oregon State on the glass, Arizona State isn't one of those teams that can. The Sun Devils start three players who are 6-foot-11 or taller, but Andrija Grbovic is basically a shooting wing.

Santiago Trouet is the team leader in rebounding, and Massamba Diop should be better at rebounding than he is.

Shooting will be what decides if Arizona State can blowout Oregon State or not. Four of the five starters for Arizona State are looking to hunt 3s. The Sun Devils attempt 3s on 40% of their shots and drill 36% from deep.

Oregon State vs. Arizona State Betting Analysis

I'm targeting Oregon State here. This feels close to the peak for Arizona State.

Plus, Oregon State hasn't lost a game by 13 points all season.

The Beavers have enough talent and familiarity with Arizona State's style to keep it close enough.

I likely would view this game differently if Arizona State was better defensively, or if it was a better offensive rebounding team.

All it takes is the Beavers to slow things down and we could have a cover.

My Pick: Oregon State +12.5 (Play to +10)
