Seton Hall vs NC State College Basketball Betting Preview
Seton Hall Basketball
Amid all the inconsistency in the Big East, the Seton Hall Pirates are one of the teams with no blemishes. The Pirates are 5-0 with four wins by 12+ points.
Context is key, though. All five of Seton Hall's wins came against sub-200 teams in KenPom and three outside the top 300.
The Pirates will have a big jump in competition starting on Monday, so they'll likely need more offensive production.
From a pace standpoint, Seton Hall aims to slow the game down, ranking 315th in adjusted tempo. The Pirates playing slow is the right call, as they rank 151st in offensive efficiency. Plus, that's the style that all of Shaheen Holloway's teams have played.
When you don't have NIL money, you have to find ways to win. Thus, Seton Hall has decided to muck games up by forcing turnovers at a 26.7% clip (third nationally) and holding teams to 34.3% shooting from inside the arc (second nationally).
Despite playing only "cupcakes" so far, Seton Hall has all the ingredients of an elite defense.
Freshman phenom Najai Hines is the linchpin of the defense. The 6-foot-10 shot-blocking enthusiast has a six-blocked-shot game and a seven-blocked-shot game in his first five outings.
For as good as the Pirates are at defending the rim, they're equally bad at scoring at the rim. They're shooting a woeful 45.9% from inside the arc, and Hines is pretty raw on the offensive end. It'll take the freshman time for him to improve his offensive game.
Seton Hall has just two players who average double-figures: guard Tajuan Simpkins and guard AJ Staton-McCray. It makes sense that Seton Hall ranks so low in offensive efficiency.
NC State Basketball
NC State fans have a lot to be excited about in the Will Wade era. The Wolfpack are 4-0 with a pair of wins over top-110 teams in KenPom (UAB, VCU).
The Wolfpack has a very exciting offense, featuring a flurry of playmakers and shooters. The primary playmaker is "forward" and ACC preseason Player of the Year Darrion Williams.
Williams is excellent at using his size to touch the paint and dish to shooters. He's the primary reason why the Pack rank 19th in offensive efficiency and shoot 3s nearly half the time.
He opens up chances for Matt Able, Paul McNeil Jr. and Tre Holloman to get looks from deep. Williams himself isn't too shabby, hitting 61% from downtown.
Able and McNeil producing to this level provides NC State with a substantial upside boost. Both have NBA-level talent and have shown it to begin this season.
We've yet to see any blemishes in NC State's offensive attack. Whether it's shooting the ball from deep, handling the ball or scoring inside, NC State doesn't have an apparent flaw.
On the defensive end, Coach Wade will aim to use pressure to test Seton Hall's ball security. That's been an area of strength for the Pirates, but having lengthy athletes pressure you on the ball isn't easy to handle.
If NC State can make life uncomfortable for the Pirates, it could lead to a very lopsided score.
Seton Hall vs. NC State Betting Analysis
I'm rolling with NC State in blowout fashion.
Part of why VCU was able to frustrate NC State was because it pushed the tempo more than the Pack wanted to.
That won't be the case here. Seton Hall wants a game in the 60-70 point range, and NC State is more than willing to score 80-90.
My Pick: NC State -10.5
