Utah State vs VCU College Basketball Betting Preview

Utah State Basketball

Utah State had a terrific first season under Jerrod Calhoun. I actually think VCU and Utah State are very similar programs. Both schools breed great coaches and rarely endure a drop-off when a coach leaves.

That's where the similarities come to an end.

VCU wants to push the pace and defend, while the Aggies want to play a deliberate tempo, finding cutters and shooters. Utah State attempted 3s on 42% of its possessions last year, and it could attempt even more 3s this year.

The Aggies have some impressive guard play. Mason Falslev is the Aggies' star, but he'll get help from high-major transfers, MJ Collins and Kolby King.

What I'm a bit worried about in this matchup is the physicality. Can the Aggies hang for a full 40 minutes against a team with more depth, size and athleticism?

Where it could come to bite the Aggies most is on the glass. They were a dreadful rebounding squad last year, and losing Aubin Gateretse could make them even worse.

VCU Basketball

VCU is back to being a defensive-minded, fast-paced squad under Phil Martelli Jr.

He's looking to push the tempo at all times. In his two seasons as Bryant's head coach, Martelli had the Bulldogs top-10 in adjusted tempo.

VCU is perfectly built to play fast and play lockdown defense. Brandon Jennings embodies what Martelli wants from his program. One of the few holdovers from the Ryan Odom era, Jennings had 15 points with six rebounds and assists in VCU's opener against Wagner.

Martelli can unlock more offense and shooting from this team than his past Bryant teams. All five of the starters can shoot it from deep, including center Lazar Djokovic, who scored 21 points in the opener.

Both Jadrian Tracey and Barry Evans will be huge for VCU. Evans can be a mismatch with his 6-foot-8 frame and ability to shoot nearly 40% from deep. Meanwhile, Tracey is a positionless defender who can play the 2-4 and hit a 3 if he's open enough.

The key to VCU unlocking its lofty upside is the development of point guards Nyk Lewis and Ahmad Nowell. Lewis drew the start in the opener, and he scored 10 points with five assists. Nowell spent last year at UConn and scored just five points off the bench.

In typical VCU fashion, depth is a strong suit. The Rams' rotation can go a legit 11 or 12 players deep, with Keyshawn Mitchell and Jordann Dumont being the 10th and 11th men.

That speaks to VCU's depth, as Mitchell started for Martelli at Bryant and Dumont came from Villanova.

Utah State vs. VCU Betting Analysis

I'm rolling with VCU.

I think both teams are pretty evenly matched, but when it comes to the shot-volume fight, I think the Rams will get more chances to score.

VCU has the bodies to dominate the offensive glass. The key for it is not to fall prey to Utah State and its propensity for forcing turnovers.

Believe it or not, this Aggies team forced turnovers on 20% of possessions last year. With VCU's frenetic pace, it'll be pivotal to limit the turnovers to ensure the shot-volume win.

My Pick: VCU ML +130
