Wagner vs Georgetown College Basketball Betting Preview
Wagner Basketball
The Wagner Seahawks have been surprisingly competitive despite the drama surrounding their program this offseason. Now-former head coach Donald Copeland was suspended in September and later fired after allegations of player abuse. 36-year-old Dwan McMillan took over in Copeland’s stead.
That turmoil led many to believe Wagner would be an easy fade in non-conference play, especially in the early going. The opposite has been the case.
Wagner is a muscular 3-1 against the spread with a +7 cover margin, hanging with Seton Hall, Fordham and UMBC after getting blown out in the first game versus VCU.
Georgetown is far better than the three squads Wagner covered against, and, most importantly, the Hoyas are far better offensively than those squads.
Wagner can hang against defensive-focused squads that can't shoot or score at a high level – the Seahawks’ “muck-it-up” style thrives in that environment. But against teams with firepower, Wagner simply can't keep up.
Georgetown Basketball
The Hoyas have impressed this season and are led by two dynamic scoring guards in Malik Mack and KJ Lewis. Georgetown’s 3-point percentage is poor this year, but those two guards can create their own shots and pick apart the Wagner defense.
Ed Cooley’s squad also gets to the rim at will, and Wagner – driven by its hard-nosed, scrappy style – fouls at a very high rate.
Wagner, historically, has needed to get second chances off the glass and win the loose ball battle to hang with better competition, but the Seahawks are actually shooting well from deep this year.
At 40.2% from 3, Wagner is the nation’s 26th-best outside shooting team. There's simply no way in hell that will continue, and Georgetown has plenty of size, athleticism and versatility on the arc to discourage open looks.
The Hoyas’ vastly superior interior size should allow them to control the paint and disallow looks at the rim.
The only thing that could potentially prevent Georgetown from running away with this game is the pace at which Wagner plays. The Seahawks take the air out of the ball and try to slow the game down to a crawl.
Expect Georgetown to run a ton going the other way, but if it can't speed up Wagner, it could be tough to extend the lead past 20 points. The Seahawks are a physical, hard-nosed bunch.
Wagner vs. Georgetown Betting Analysis
Ultimately, this game should look similar to Wagner’s game against VCU.
The Rams had no issue scoring in the open floor, grabbing boards or stopping the Seahawks in the paint.
Georgetown should win comfortably and continue its bid for an at-large.
My Pick: Georgetown -23.5
