Mobile sports betting is now legal in Rhode Island. There is currently one operator in the state, and since it is regulated by the lottery commission, it is unlikely that more will be coming to the state anytime soon. Daily fantasy gaming is also available in the state.

Sports Betting Gets Rolling in Rhode Island

Government officials wasted no time in discussing what sports betting looks like for their state. The lottery staff was designated to oversee all sports wagering and needed to find a tech partner to provide the software and services needed. IGT was the only bidder and took on the task of implementing sports betting in The Ocean State. Sports betting is only available at retail locations at this time.

The Supreme Court Rules PAPSA Unconstitutional

The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act prevented any type of wagering on sporting events. This was ruled unconstitutional, allowing states to implement and regulate sports betting at the state level.

Rhode Island was one of the first states to legalize sports betting on a state level after the Supreme Court shut down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act in 2018. Early on, the state only made retail sports betting available. In 2019, legislation was pushed that would allow mobile sports betting. On March 12th, 2019 mobile sports betting became a reality within the state. The Rhode Island Lottery Commission oversees mobile sports betting, and currently there is only one sportsbook operating in the state.
