Appalachian State Mountaineers
What a start it was for new offensive coordinator Mike Anthony. He stems from the Kendal Briles system and brings an up-tempo offense with a creative run scheme and a QB-friendly system. Anthony pushed the pace, spread things out, and got multiple talented running backs involved. Jaquari Lewis led the charge with 69 yards and a touchdown (11 carries) while Ja'Quez Cross ripped off a 39-yard rush and averaged 5.4 yards per carry on all his other touches; even Kanye Roberts averaged 7.8 yards a touch on his four carries. QB Malachi Singleton completed 22-of-24 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns.
All in all, pretty darn good — except it came against Maine.
App State faces a stiffer test as it takes on East Carolina and, in two weeks, NC State. But there's enough of a runway to start the season where App State could really get this Briles-style system rolling by the time conference play comes around. There are 36 new players on the roster from last year, but the offensive line is experienced.
Defensively, App State wasn't tested. The jury's still out on that side of the ball, which could still struggle against more talented offenses (though the term "talented" is really going to be stretched until at least October). There are depth concerns across the board, and a unit that finished No. 103 in points per drive last year didn't make many splash additions or hires to improve. Chances are, this defense turns in a season similar to last year's.
East Carolina Pirates
From the very first drive, it was clear East Carolina was in for a hellish day in Tuscaloosa to open the season. Its offensive line was so outmatched that it logged -0.03 line yards per rush, and the running backs couldn't wriggle free, gaining only 1.7 yards after contact per rush. Of ECU's 19 rushing attempts, 11 went for two or fewer yards, and seven were stopped at the line of scrimmage.
It didn't help that the receiving corps was decimated by injuries this game. Both top options, Brock Spalding and Landon Sides, sat with injuries, leaving QB Mitch Griffis with not a lot of help. Griffis, a product of the 2020 recruiting class, sat out the 2024 season before spending last year as a backup at Texas Tech. This was his first start since 2023, and it looked like it — he averaged just 5.4 air yards per attempt.
But the lopsided nature on both sides makes this game an unusable data point. I don't anticipate this offensive line gets blown up again given ECU's slate of opponents (we'll revisit on Oct. 22 against Memphis). New offensive coordinator Jordan Davis (North Texas) had only 41 plays to work with, as his team didn't convert a single third down on Saturday. That part is slightly concerning.
What is worth noting is the seven tackles for loss ECU generated even against this Alabama front. But the takeaways from that 48-10 blowout at the hands of Alabama are few and far between. At least, they should be.
This week offers a good barometer against Appalachian State. East Carolina is favored by more than a touchdown at home in what should be favorable conditions and possibly with both starting receivers back.
App State vs East Carolina Pick, Betting Analysis
Watching line trends is helpful when deciding on your pick. To open, this total was lined at 55.5 — just a hook above one of the most prominent key figures in college football totals betting. That nudged to 54.5 for less than 15 minutes on Sunday before immediately being bet up two full points. That's a textbook head fake.
East Carolina mustered just 44 total plays in its 48-10 throttling at the hands of Alabama. The offensive line was totally overwhelmed, and the Pirates went 0-9 on third down. That kind of dismal box score can really impact future odds. Needless to say, it's not a data point I'm taking very much stock in, considering ECU won't be that level of out-talented again this season. Wipe that slate clean.
On the other side, App State gave up some ground to Maine in the trenches, though an ineffective throw game tanked the Black Bears' ability to score points. The offense under Anthony moved well and with a solid tempo. I'd expect the Mountaineers' trio of good running backs to remain involved against a team whose defensive front is only moderately experienced. I'd also look for Ashton Gray to have a better outing this time around.
The weather looks good early (and not so good late in the day), and that sharp move on the over is where I want to side. Expect two up-tempo offenses and a much, much better outing from East Carolina. We're getting this total at a discount given how bad Week 1 was on the road.
